Did you delay/bring forward TTC around moves?

Just pondering. We are in the process of planning a move overseas. Rough timeline probably 6-12 months. We also want TTC DC3. I have to say though my preference would be to move either pregnant or with a 4m+ baby - the idea of rocking up 6w post partum & trying to organise our lives fills me with dread!

Anyway, we are just going to carry on both planning to move & planning a baby & see whe happens - after all neither is a definite. But I wondered if other people had stories to share about planning your family around moves.

Well, at the end of the day, you can plan but nature takes over, and babies come when they want.

I wouldn't be worried about the move, I would be worried about being alone with a young baby where I have not yet built a good network of support. In that issue alone, I would put the idea of a new baby out of my mind until I and the rest of the family are settled in the new place, school, job, neughbourhood, etc.

We moved to Germany 6 months pregnant with DC2 (DC1 was 20 months) - we only knew the move was an option 6 weeks before we moved though, and everything happened quickly - DH moved over immediately and I packed up and sold the house and followed with DD.

A new baby or big bump is a talking point with potential new acquaintances... :o

I did have a rough ride at first - but not due to the baby, more due to the language and unexpectedly rural location.

We moved 6 months pg with dd2. It wasn't too bad but was tiring finding an apartment, packing, unpacking etc. while keeping dd1 amused too. just make sure that you have sufficient medical insurance for pregnancy and childbirth in your new country, the name of a good obstetrician if necessary and your insurance doesn't have any exclusions.

No, we had a question of a move then kind of accidentally got pg with DC3, then I moved at 24 weeks pg. It was pretty awful - more the after bit as someone above said - having a young baby without my well established UK support. But I agree it was far preferable to moving with a young baby! At least we were settled in a home and my older DC were "settled in" school before the baby arrived.

So, I wouldn't really plan it that way. But tbh if we hadn't got accidentally pregnant at that stage I would never have had the confidence to ttc with a move pending, or shortly after moving. Then the moment may well have passed (we have massive age gaps anyway) and DD2 wouldn't be here which would be awful....

I guess you can only do what's right for you. As you know putting it on hold can be a bad idea as nature doesn't usually just "fall in" with plans. However to be limited by your due date could be problematic - not sure on your circumstances. We were v lucky that we had to move quickly and were able to fit that in around pregnancy dates. Also we had the appropriate medical care at destination which was another consideration - no paternity leave for DH but that was the least of our worries in the end Grin

So badically OP, everybody ends up moving countries at about 6 months pregnant - its inevitable, mysteriously - so best make sure this won't present insurance or medical care problems at destination in anticipation :o Good luck, and best get ttc ing :o

We moved cities at about 36w with DC2, which want my fave experience, but I feel like there is many a slip twixt cup & lip on both job & ttc sides not really worth delaying either for the other!

We moved 15 with number 2..It was fine. Just consider the location maybe? Good healthcare etc?

NewLeafExpat · 13/07/2014 07:27

hi Elizabeth and all that have done it already. DH and I are TTC#1 (taking a while!) with a view to moving country around the new year.

funnily enough that time would make me 6mo pg so maybe this will be our month? Wink haha, we can hope.

anyway my advice would be wing it and see, it may be ideal timing but it may not. its easier for me as going in blind due to it being number one, but the time it takes to conceive is anyone's guess! like a move abroad you would just hope that you'll just get on with what life gives you and make the best of it. it'll all be alright in the end. Hmm Confused Grin
