Living overseas

Whether you're considering emigrating or an expat abroad, you'll find likeminds on this forum.

Olive's dh is doing his yearly "this country is rubbish lets go to Australia" speach - am being swayed

His brother lives in Perth and loves loves loves it there, has been in Australia for about 4 years or so.

Dh is always going on about emigrating there, espeacially when the weather is crap here (ie most of August ).

I am scared thinking that by the time immigration is sorted, I will be nearing 40 and it is a big move to make - am 36 now, girls are nearly 4 and 2.

Pros and cons please from those that have done it and those that thought about it and didn't.

Thank you!

xx

expatinscotland · 05/09/2006 12:55

i'd be out of here like a shot.

Iklboo · 05/09/2006 12:55

GGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

My parents had the opportunity to emigrate when I was little. My nan refused to go with them (she lived with us and looked after me when I was little) becuase she didn't want to leave her youngest daughter behind (who was about 25 at the time I think). My mum wouldn't go without my nan, so it was all called off.
Nan subsequently fell out with youngest daughter!
My parents have regretted not going ever since - although I'm glad they didn't becuase I would never have met DH and had gorgeous DS.

At least drizzly Oldham doesn't put you at an astronomical risk of skin cancer...

The men are misogynist gits and the sense of humour is shit, they won't get your dry northern wit.

coderoo · 05/09/2006 12:55

dotn go
id not talk to you.

DumbledoresGirl · 05/09/2006 12:55

Think about the positives you will miss here (if there are any!)

I am married to an Australian and we could leave for there tomorrow if we chose, but, despite liking Australia when I visit, there is no way I would want to separate myself from my family and the culture here (also, the unremitting heat would get me down very quieckly I think).

DaddyCool · 05/09/2006 12:57

i'm sorry but the place is near perfect. all the luxury and convenience of the US with nicer people (though yes, SOH is rubbish) and beautiful weather and beautiful houses and wonderful beaches and and and.....

coderoo · 05/09/2006 12:57

no weirdy trainers to buy

expatinscotland · 05/09/2006 12:58

she's away phoning the estate agent so she can put her house up for sale.

DaddyCool · 05/09/2006 12:58

the hassle is bad and yes, you'll most def fall out with DH but it's got to be worth it.

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 12:59

I am not a sun lover, spent most of the time there wearing long sleeves and floaty tops hiding in the shade

But I like it being sunny iyswim

Shopping is shite looking back, hmmmmmm

Suzy loves it there though and she is in Perth, it is ridiculous o'clock there now, like 3am or something?

mate you dont like ti hot
dont go

DumbledoresGirl · 05/09/2006 12:59

No CULTURE there! Their idea of high culture is watching a rugby or cricket match. Sport takes up about one half of their news - every night!

expatinscotland · 05/09/2006 13:00

as opposed to here, where we get to hear about binge drinkers and shootings and stabbings.

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 13:00

am imaging the empty beaches we used to walk on, sitting down watching dolphins with our cold beers.....

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
