His brother lives in Perth and loves loves loves it there, has been in Australia for about 4 years or so.

Dh is always going on about emigrating there, espeacially when the weather is crap here (ie most of August ).

I am scared thinking that by the time immigration is sorted, I will be nearing 40 and it is a big move to make - am 36 now, girls are nearly 4 and 2.

Pros and cons please from those that have done it and those that thought about it and didn't.

Thank you!

xx

er .....jobs maybe rhubarb?

Sandcastles · 05/09/2006 13:18

DG, we were here 6 weks before dh applied for a job, he had 1 interview, got offered that day & started just over a week later. It depends on what you are looking for and how fussy you are.

DH said he would have taken anything as a stop gap, but he lucked out & found a place that wanted him.

DumbledoresGirl · 05/09/2006 13:18

Rhubarb - correct me if I am wrong, but haven't you just moved back here? I am not saying GB can't be crap (though it is a lovely sunny day here) but you must have some idea of what OO would be missing if she left. I don't think it come down to the cost of things or the weather. Can family ties and other, less tangible things, be thrown off that easily?

Bozza · 05/09/2006 13:19

Actually, it is sunny and warm where I am!

DaddyCool · 05/09/2006 13:19

jobs shmobs. any reasonably intelligent person with a bit of equity will do just fine in a commonwealth country.

NomDePlume · 05/09/2006 13:19

TBH, I think family and friends are a farrrrr BETTER reason to stay than the rain is to go....

DumbledoresGirl · 05/09/2006 13:21

Err hem! In Australia, there is virtually no work at all for mechanical engineers hoping to work in any environment other than mining. I dare say that won't affect many people, but I just wanted to balance the scales a little bit!

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 13:21

tbh I think my mum and dad would be a major thing for me not to go, it is not like we are close, and I wouldn't miss them (!!) but they would miss my girls so much. It would be v sad. Also, MIL has looked after them both when I work, dd1 from 5 months old, she is now 4, so huge tie there.

But you can't live your life for other people.

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:22

yes but then you haev the stress of them being old and oyu being too far away to do anythign
a nd the guilt

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:22

OO you can tho

nailpolish · 05/09/2006 13:22

because dh andi were so close to going to oz, i have made dh promise never to tell the dd's or they will kill us! i dont like the fact that we stayed for dh's dad, but i respect his wishes

fil loves the fact we stayed for him

Sandcastles · 05/09/2006 13:23

nailpolish, your house would be air conditioned...but if that stops you just think about the poor guys that work in it...

bundle · 05/09/2006 13:23

friend of mine emigrated with her (aussie) dh and missed her family terribly. her mum died a couple of years ago, but part of her "deal" is to visit UK to see her dad/brother/cousins every year. they live in Sydney and find it terribly expensive (haven't got on the property ladder after 8 or 9 yrs) and are planning to move to afford a home.

lucycat · 05/09/2006 13:23

totally agree ndp!

especially as oo isn't that keen on the sun!

Sandcastles · 05/09/2006 13:23

the people who work OUTSIDE in it

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:24

yes " SOrry mum, i love you but its sunny there"
arf

hunkermunker · 05/09/2006 13:24

Ach, go on holiday there.

DaddyCool · 05/09/2006 13:24

depends how close you are to your family cod.

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:25

4mins
adn its great
but yes if bereaved of whatever dh(canac) woudl move

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 13:25

I like the sun, just don't sun worship like a red lobster.

I hide in the shade a la Victorian lady

BIL couldn't afford Sydney so he moved to Perth and has just bought a GORGEOUS 2 bed house near a lake or ocean, I forget which, for $300,000 aussie dollars which is about £120K I think

DG, my dh is a mechanical engineer...

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:26

min is a spy
think they need them in america/canada?

Mercy · 05/09/2006 13:26

DH is a Kiwi. One thing he felt he really missed out in an otherwise idyllic sounding childhood was the opportunity to travel. In the UK we can easily go to Europe for holidays. Down under you are much more restricted.

Air fares are bloody expensive to/from there too.

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 13:26

AHA!

So you would emigrate Cod?

OP posts:
Sandcastles · 05/09/2006 13:26

and his job isn't in mining
