Living overseas

Whether you're considering emigrating or an expat abroad, you'll find likeminds on this forum.

Olive's dh is doing his yearly "this country is rubbish lets go to Australia" speach - am being swayed

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 11:04

His brother lives in Perth and loves loves loves it there, has been in Australia for about 4 years or so.

Dh is always going on about emigrating there, espeacially when the weather is crap here (ie most of August ).

I am scared thinking that by the time immigration is sorted, I will be nearing 40 and it is a big move to make - am 36 now, girls are nearly 4 and 2.

Pros and cons please from those that have done it and those that thought about it and didn't.

Thank you!

xx

Olive
come over
we could spend many a happy lunch time in Freo snorting with laughter over local red wine and crayfish while our children breathed fresh air and glowed a ruddy healthy glow in the spring sunshine

bundle · 05/09/2006 13:27

olive, you might not get in you old thing

suzywong · 05/09/2006 13:27

that's not snorth AT the local wine and lobster btw, just as an audio accompaniment

littlerach · 05/09/2006 13:27

Do you onow, when the ILs moved to USA, MIL had so many worries, though her kids were grown up.

15 years later, she wonders whatver took her so long. She would never move back here, she reckons they'd never have had the same kind of lifestyle or opportunities that they have there.

I know Austarlia is a long way, but I'd do it.

People will visit you, the ILs never seem to have any free spare rooms around the holidays.

Go go go!!

PS childcare - your kids will be almost at school.

Plus, you'll be a housewife, you don't need it!

lucycat · 05/09/2006 13:27

If Australia is a long way from England, isn't Perth a long way away from the rest of Australia?

are we convincing you to stay oo?

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:27

Jobs Jobs Jobs - she could be a teacher! Teach the Aussie kids how to talk properly!

Yes I did move back here but not willingly as you may guess.

Family can be a hinderance as well as a good thing. I'd never get stuck somewhere just because family lived there, they won't be around forever and you have to live your life!

quokka · 05/09/2006 13:29

I'm from Perth, and if you go you'll know what a quokka is . If you have any questions you can always ask. Its a great place for kids to grow up, you can have your holidays in Rotto. You can dump the kids somewhere and have a weekend in Margaret River and go to some of the best wineries. The schools are great, very new, some with swimming pools, huge ovals etc. You'll love it.

I have married a pom who is very close to his family and as his sis died he's an only child so doubt we will be moving for while .

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:29

daddycool what are you dogin then arent you in enalgnd?

suzywong · 05/09/2006 13:29

Perth is closer to the UK than the Eastern States

Olive knows she wants to move and live a charmed life in Fremantle. It's just a matter of time

noddyholder · 05/09/2006 13:30

I'd go for it.I had the obligatory year working there in my twenties and can honestly say if it wasn't for my health(they wouldn't have ne!)I would go in a flash.Much easier life better hospitals and a lovely chilled out life You can always come back but you probably wouldn't want to.And you already know people so you have an advantage and Perth is GORGEOUS!

DaddyCool · 05/09/2006 13:30

cod - only temporarily. going back to canada mid september.

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:30

why?

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 13:32

cod = what on earth are you on about? I have never shagged a rock god. I have however shagged a buffoon who thought he was a rock god. Difference.

i know

foxinsocks · 05/09/2006 13:32

it's a pain being so far from your family though oo, especially if you are used to relying on them a bit

I know at first it will seem wonderful - I don't even get on that well with my parents - but it does bug me that it would cost us around £4000 to go and visit them in the school holidays (in fact, we haven't been over since 2003).

Most people can't afford to fly back and forth the whole time.

nailpolish · 05/09/2006 13:32

COD would your family be as smug as mine that you really really wanted to go to oz but you didnt because you didnt want to upset them?

my mother would be mortified, but fil is v smug

Rhubarb · 05/09/2006 13:33

Go you silly cow! What are you waiting for? It's only fear of the unknown. All those saying stay are just jellyarses!

DaddyCool · 05/09/2006 13:33

too many reasons to repeat.

DON'T GET ME WRONG, i quite like the UK but just not enough to not give something else a go. just to summarise:

  1. big houses
  2. no crime
  3. better education and health
  4. easier to set up on my own
  5. snowy winters
  6. CLEAN!
  7. a pool
Piffle · 05/09/2006 13:33

If I was not so hung up about taking ds aged 12 away from exp (his dad) I'd be off like a shot. As would DP
But we would have no grandparents, no family I'm a kiwi but all my family now live in England.
I'd def opt for NZ over Oz though, but I am biased

lucycat · 05/09/2006 13:35

and if it didn't work out and oo wanted to move back to Blighty, would she be able to afford to?

as I know people who have been and come back and now can't get back on the property ladder.....

coderoo · 05/09/2006 13:35

so why are you not there then DC?

oliveoil · 05/09/2006 13:36

I loved NZ too, but preferred Australia

BIL was over in July for a month and he says that this place is a dump in comparison. Good shopping, he spent ££££ on clothes, but was glad to go back.

His mum and dad miss him, he last saw me when I was 8 months pregnant with dd2 who was 2 last week, so he does miss loads of family stuff.

BUT HE GOES WATER SKIING AFTER WORK AND HAS A BARBQ ON THE BEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
