Moving a dog from US to UK

I am probably moving back to the UK in a few months. We have a dog and much as I would love to leave him behind the children insist he comes.....!

Does anyone know how I go about this? All his vaccinations and so are are up to date. Do I have to book him in with the airline? Or do you need to use a specialist company to do it?

Any help gratefully received!

You will probably need to contact a specialist company in the US which deals with this sort of thing. You'll need all sorts of paperwork, cerificates, vet checks etc.

you need a pet passport. Rabies vaccinations up to date. Vet check and tick treatment 24 hours before you fly and the dog is sealed into an approved carrier on the morning of the flight by either a vet or customs person. I cant recall.
If you dont have up to date rabies shots you need them some months in advance.
It was a real headache!

We flew Virgin who were extremely helpful on what we had to do and who to contact.

Brought 4 cats from US to Uk. Pets cant fly without a Pet Passport. PETS.
Check out the DEFRA site. If you don't do the quarantine process in the US (6 months between first and second rabies shots) then your dog will probably be in UK quarantine. You can do it all yourself or get a specialist company. It can be complicated and quite expensive. You will need an approved airline,we used BA.
WE did this 8 years ago, so things might have changed.
I hope when you said "leave him behind" that meant "Find him a new loving caring family to live with"
