Beijing - any reflections?

Hello

My DH is considering applying for a job in Beijing. It would be a tough one to get, so a long shot but he doesn't want to start the process until I know I'm up for it. We have 1 7 month year old.

Does anyone live there, or lived there recently? What's it like day to day? Also, how much of a problem is the pollution for breathing and skin problems?

Any views appreciated - I don't really know how to make my mind up!

I live in china, though not Beijing. Pollution is an issue especially with a young child. You can google aqi levels to get an idea. I would recommend portable air filtration units for your accommodation.

We are in HK and its pretty bad this winter. We can see the smog rolling over and the sky going murky within minutes.
Air purifiers ( google IQair or allen ). We also have rainbow vacum cleaner wich is in my opinion a must too as it traps dust particles. Very powerful suction. We use it once o week to refresh all upholstery and bedding too.
If you have a history of allergies or asthma, it is a serious concern.

If its a good opportunity and you are up for it go! There is a great energy in China and so much to see and learn.
You really need to make sure the package allows for a housing alliance to live in an expat area. It can be a very isolating experience otherwise.
Beijing is huge and traffic jams can be epic! The neighborhoods around the Sanlitun village is great. Very safe, with lots of embassies & international schools and a european cafe culture.

Hi I agree with masteroftheuniverse I also live in Beijing and in fact we initially said no due to the pollution. But then We came and looked and decided to give it a go. I guess if DH really wants the job it is harder to negotiate terms but I suggest the following.

• a look see trip with a relocation agent to check out housing schools hospitals etc so you can see what you are getting into
• if poss a meet with an expat at the same time to find out about day to day life

If these aren't possible I guess more web searching and mumsnetting! You don't say whether you have lived abroad before?

• in terms of package as well as usual schooling, healthcare, housing (I suggest near your chosen school) I definitely suggest air filters and also humidifiers as its v dry here. The air filters are v expensive so you really need the company to pay if poss.

In terms if day to day life I finding of it remarkably similar to back home - school run homework etc! But we do loads of travelling around Asia which is great and China us fascinating.
The pollution is a definite consideration and you have to make up your own mind about this. We all wear masks if it is very high. But that's not been that often. Check your chosen school has filters. The other problem is traffic. On the plus side it hardly ever rains so we often have bright sunny days - more so than with typical British weather!

Someone was kidnapped from my cousin's school in Beijing. Keep a low profile. Teach your kids not to jump into any cars. One cousin with asthma has difficulty breahing (they are from Canada). You cannot use the internet freely - no YouTube, no facebook. Not a pleasant experience.

You can use the internet freely if you have a vpn.
