Hi Mogwai, did you get my email? Hope it's all going smoothly. When are you heading out?

mogwai · 05/07/2006 23:49

hi Hannahsaunt

No, I didn't get your email! I got your original one when you said you would probably reply using a different email address (when you had more time!).

I assumed you were mad busy arranging to come back to the UK for the beginning of August - didn't want to hassle you!

Since then, dh has passed his FRCA part II so we are all set, in theory. We are still considering Sydney, but I've subscribed to a website calles "britishexpats", which is causing me to worry about the cost of living in Sydney.

My dh needs to look into what he will be paid as a Reg in Australia and then we can look at the cost of accomodation.

I feel nervous, scared and so excited all at the same time!! Sure you've been there!

Hi, emigrating or just short term? Which hospital? Need to watch the commuting times in Sydney they can be long.

mogwai · 06/07/2006 00:23

ooh thanks for reply

Not sure which hospital yet, just at the planning stages.

We were wondering about Paramatta though (not strictly Sydney, I know)

Hi I replied on your other thread about working hours (very late I'm afraid) looks like I was right about your dh it was the 56 that gave it away!
Sorry don't know much about Parramatta have a few friends who are out there for a short time and a couple permanantly. One lives South near her hospital, one lives centrally (works in the CBD) one of the short termers lives North of Sydney will try and post where tomorrow (I'm supposed to be working) but she loves it good social life for them and children, good schools, good access to beaches etc.I guess it's important to work out what you want from being there in order to choose the right spot, the Aussies will be on-line soon and shoould be able to help a lot more.

Have a look at House Rental Prices .

It is hard isn't it? When I flew out I had no idea where to live, I just knew the name of the place I was working.

Give us some more info & I'm sure we'll be able to come up with some suggestions. Are you ok with apartments or do you want a house? How many bedrooms? Need a garden? Want to be near water? Where will your DH be working? Need schools? Will you have a car?

hi - have resent from my sent folder; don't know what happened there! It was a long one too! Fingers crossed this time. Let me know and I'll start again if nec.

mogwai · 06/07/2006 22:43

thanks for all your replies

We have one child who will be two years old. I'd be ok with an apartment but would prefer to have a garden for the little one, or to be close to some parkland/beaches

We don't even know the name of any of the hospitals in Sydney yet. My husband is still in the process of clearing out the study having passed his FRCA, so we are in need of suggestions!

Hannahsaunt I'll check my email!

Hi all

Mr Mogwai here. Thanks v much for all replies so far.

Just to let you know where I'm at. Qualified in '96 and did gen medicine for 5 years. Got MRCP but changed to anaesthetics. 2 years SHO and just coming to end 2nd year SpR, just got final exam. Looking to travel out there next August - so would be entering my fourth year of five then. Interested in ICU, some general DGH paeds (not tertiary centre stuff), orthopaedics, obstetrics and trauma (bizarre combo I know!) Guess its a general anaesthetic job for 1 year only with some time on ICU I'm after. Think the equivalent grade over there is ........ Want a job somewhere in Sydney - prefer something fairly central but again willing to be flexible (with some limits - that bush is fairly expansive!)

Looking to rent 2-3 bed fully furnished house with garden for (then) 2 year old (and entertaining with ubiquitous "barbie"). Realise this may be prohibitively expensive so will be flexible but need at least 2 bedrooms. Prefer area with some sort of cafe culture/ cosmopolitan feel/ central point to meet. Likely to have a car out there (cant imagine wife without one trying to entertain little one!) Think wife is looking to work 2-3 days so would need access to childcare.

Also need to know roughly wha monthly salary is likely to be along with rough estimates of rental costs and childcare costs and cost of second hand reliable car.

Think you mumsnetters are up to the challenge?! My wife reckons this forum is the fountain of all knowledge and there isnt a question that cant be answered here. Think I'm starting to believe her......!!

Muchos thankos

M. Mogwai
