Anyone move abroad as a child or emigrate with their own school-aged children?

I'd love to hear your stories and experiences, both positive and negative. I moved from the UK to N. America as a youngster and although the transition was tough, I am now very grateful for the experience. I'm about to move my own children to a very different part of the world and while I think it will be fantastic for their education, I'm a bit worried about my 11 year old daughter who is very firmly settled with her friends and activities. The boys are 8 and 6 and will be a bit more adaptable, I think. Any advice?

Where are you moving to?

We moved from the UK to the US 6 weeks ago with 2 daughters (9 & 6). Definitely harder for the older one who misses her friends a lot. We encourage her to email and Skype them if she wants to. We also make sure that we have great stuff planned for the weekends as a family and have plans for places we want to see here on holidays etc. Much like you are grateful for your experience as a child we are ultimately hoping our girls will feel the same way. It's not easy though as sometimes I could happily get on the plane home but have to keep being positive for the kids! Haven't started them on any activities yet as we arrived at an awkward time. I am also a bit freaked out at the competitiveness of some things so need to find things that suit us. Good luck with your move.
