Hello! So my DP has been offered a job in california. He has made a condition with his work that I must be able to work over there as well so I won't be stuck twiddling my thumbs. I am super scared but think it will be an adventure. Can I please have some positive "I was scared but it was great" stories please? :)

Never done it myself but watching with interest. California is huge, will you be based in a city?

SupremePizza · 02/10/2013 13:11

san francisco :)

Go for it. IMHO you'd be odd if you weren't a little scared lol. We were nervous before our move (to Asia) and it didn't work out as planned, but the point is we have ALL grown from it and I wouldn't not do it if I could turn the clock back.

We are hoping for a Seattle or San Fran move in the next year or two. Have you been to SF before?

claraschu · 02/10/2013 13:47

SF is absolutely wonderful. You are very lucky to have the chance to live there.

thanks for your replies! Yes I've been there a couple of times as a tourist and did love it. We'd end up living just outside rather than in the thick of it, but I'm used to london so big cities don't scare me. The only downside I can possibly think of is being so far from my family. Everything else is a positive (including maybe having to work as a waitress and being away from his family :))

Do you want to work? Maybe it would be nice to twiddle your thumbs for a while?? Smile

CookieDoughKid · 08/10/2013 22:36

Out of interest which visa will you be granted to allow you to work over there?

AmericasTorturedBrow · 13/10/2013 23:01

If he is able to make it a condition, get the visa before you leave, unless you don't mind really?

We moved to LA nearly 2 years ago - DH's company started processing my green card a few months ago because I'm now climbing the walls! I've been fine up til now because I have two young DC (DD was newborn when we moved)

California is awesome though. So much to see and do, SF is great but just do your research about where to live

Go for it, you only live once Wink

Hi Supreme - I moved to the East bay about 3 months ago, DH is working in SF. It is lovely, still sunny at the moment! Where we are is quite rural but we can get into the city easily. We did shedloads of research before the move - happy to share some tips on useful sites etc if you want to PM me.

On the visa front - I am technically able to work on DH's but it is still taking 3 -4 months to get the actual work permit as we could only start the process when I arrived in the country, so you might want to watch out for that if it is a similar visa.

I absolutely love south of San Fran. But SF, itself? I don't get it at all!! What is it about San Fran that people love so much?!

CoolStoryBro · 24/10/2013 04:22

Sorry, OP, that's not much use to you though...
