OH works in construction management in the UK. We are heading out to Melbourne by November and he is looking for work in construction but most of the companies want him to come along with his CV for a chat when we actually arrive. OH obviously wants to secure work before we arrive and is starting to worry in case the construction industry has slowed in and around Melbourne.
We have heard from relatives in Oz that the new builds on the outskirts of Melbourne are still growing but that rising house prices mean first time buyers (like here) are struggling to get on the property ladder and OH is worried this may slow down the new build sales hence causing problems within construction companies.
We have spent the last few years struggling in the UK due to the construction industry collapsing and are now getting scared that we might be jumping back into the fire when we get to Melbourne. The problem is that is has taken this long to sell our house and our visas expire in a few months so we have to go now or risk losing our chance.
Sorry - as always that turned into more info than required!
Basically, how are the joiners/carpenters/construction companies doing out there just now?
Also, do they shut down over Christmas holidays like they do here in the UK? THanks :)
