does anyone know if you can use the equity in a UK house to buy in New Zealand? House in UK will have BTL mortgage.

Pretty sure you can't - my DH looked into it. It kind of makes sense as if you defaulted on NZ mortgage, they wouldn't have any ability to access the money from your UK property.

I think you can actually, I know you can definitely get a mortgage in NZ or Australia to buy a uk house as a BTL if you wanted to pay a higher interest rate lol and they can use the uk law to repossess if necessary.

Wow that's interesting mosman - thanks for that info. We have a uk house which is rented out and are reluctant to sell it but without the equity I can't see how we would afford to buy here. I will get DH to look at it again.
