Considering Boston

I have always wanted to do a PhD and MIT has one of the best doctoral programmes for my subject in the world. I got good enough grades in my masters that I should be able to get in. DH's company have an office on the edge of Boston so he could transfer without any bother. Is this bonkers? I'll get shot in the street won't I? DS will get an American accent and we'll never see our parents again. We'll have to wait a few years as currently TTC #2 and would want all kids at school before we go, but does anyone have any pointers or experience of studying in the USA? Taking kids to school in the US? Or living in Boston?
