Sounds like a great adventure. Don't know anything much about Qatar. Feel a bit wary about the Gulf at the moment, wondering what would happen if say the political situation deteriorated in that general region and you wanted to leave your job very quickly. Still, given the chance I think I would try it too. Will you be working mostly with expats or with locals?

klou · 17/05/2006 23:44

meo - i lived there when i was younger, then moved back in my early 20's to work, then moved from doha to bahrain working for an airline. loved it. would go back in a second. am in my 30's now with kids living in america - i am english. ask away.

Hi Klou - guess I'm just after a sense for what the place is like, pros/cons - whats going to drive me mad (ie is it like italy where it takes aeons to get anything done)... how did you cope with the heat... ANYTHING!!

meo - who will you be working for - as that will greatly affect the experience you have. have you been to see doha yet? it's a very family orientated place, with loads of expats from all over the world. do you have kids? the hotels now have "bars" - of a sort and they serve alcohol in the hotel restaurants, but there are no offlicences, you have to apply for a special licence for that and you get an allowence every month. nice social life - thursday & friday are the weekends - so they are the nights for bbq's with friends and going to the beach with a whole crowd of peole on fridays, trips to the dessert, etc. lots of people belong to private clubs, with pools and sport facilities. i used to work in one of them. do you drive? - that is a must - but i have to say the locals are THE worst drivers. work attitiude is very laid back - you just have to go with it or you will drive yourself crazy - it's the attitude - if it is meant to be.......which can be hard of you are used to controlling your work enviroment.
check out www.expatmum.com - set up by dubai mums, but a whole section on qatar.
the shopping - the souks are great, very fun and cheap. they now have big malls with lots of western shops. you can pretty much get most food items - apart from bacon/pork items obviously.
do you know what kind of accommodation you will be getting? please let me know any other questions!

Just hi-jacking the thread to say i am in Dubai too - but know nothing about Doha i'm afraid.

meowmix · 22/05/2006 10:05

Hi klou - thanks for the help. I'll be working for an international firm but can't go into details as yet.

I really don't drive well and thats a big worry for me over there. We're going out there for a few days in June so will get a better sense then.

... aagh! so much to think about!!

so I'm just back from my first visit to Doha before moving out at beginning August. Lord its a different world out there. I found it incredible but am now worried about how it'll actually be, especially as I'll be out there on my own for a month while DH/DS pack up house and home. we have found a villa but it wasn't cheap and now I worry that we won't save money in the end because the rentals are so high.

guess its just a case of cold feet. Any advice anyone?
