Regina in Canada - cost of living

i have previously posted on here a while ago that we may be moving to regina in canada. it is looking almost certain to be happening and we should be moving out at the of March 2013 if all goes well.

i know people have said its not a good place to live, its in the middle of nowhere etc etc but its not put us off.

is there anyone there or even in canada that can answer my questions below. we know our rent is going to be around 2000 dollars but what does other things cost

  1. grocery bill - we are a family of three (ds is 9 years old), dont eat red meat (apart from the odd sausage, mince, bacon) and currently spend about £60 a week on our shopping.
  2. gas and electric - how much are we looking to spend a month (taking a yearly figure and dividing by 12 to take into account winter/summer months)
  3. internet - how much is it for unlimited internet per month
  4. landline and mobile phones
  5. council tax equivilant?

we are trying to work out whether my dh's wage will cover our costs and allow us to save some money each month or whether i will have to eventually find work as well. (the current plan is for me to stay at home for the fist year to let ds settle in). his wage will be between 6000 and 7000 dollars a month

I have never been to Regina, but I am Canadian and that sounds like a pretty healthy salary to me. I would think you would be quite comfortable, as your bills would be unlikely to come to anywhere close to $4-5000 per month. But you haven't mentioned transport. You would probably both need a car, depending on where you live.
Food ( and alcohol) are expensive in Canada. I think you would pay more than the equivalent of £60 per week.
I just spent the summer in BC and the phone / Internet / cable companies are all offering crazy deals - $30 per month for six months ( I used to pay about $120) - you may find they are doing the same in Sask.
Sorry I can't be more specific about prices, but hopefully someone else will be able to offer some insight.

You might find more people who live in Regina if you asked somewhere like British Expats which has a big Canadian forum. We live in interior BC on a lower salary (about $5k per month) and dh doesn't work. It's a bit tight and we aren't really able to save any money but we have a good standard of living.

Try this thread here: britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=730597 it looks as if it might have been designed for you :)

Your wage will be about the same as ours take home, and we live in the most expensive town, mortgage is $2600, and I have three kids who do a gazillion activities. It is very tight, tbh, and we are always skint. Our taxes and utilities are quite high, too. We run two cars (one of which we own, and one we pay a loan) and dh commutes with a 3 hour round trip every day. Two cell phones. Pay about $140 for full cable, Internet and home phone package.

You should have no issues in Regina on that sort of income.

If you are moving to Regina, the cost of living will the least of your problems.
Seriously,it's awful. Please don't feel you have to live there. OP. Have you been there? (If so, my apologies.)
