Giving birth in NYC

We're moving to NYC (technically Brooklyn) at the end of August. All being well, our new baby will arrive in February 2013 and we already have a DD, who'll be 2 in a week. I won't be working whilst we're out there, but am hoping to do some volunteer work in order to apply for jobs when we return (career change).

We have medical insurance and a recommended obstetrician so that side of things is covered.

However I was wondering if anyone had any advice/recommendations regarding meeting mums (of toddlers and mums-to-be).. Realise it's quite hard until I know exactly where in Brooklyn we're going to be, but anything (websites, phone numbers etc) would be appreciated... Somewhere we can go to make friends and find out about local events would be great. Don't need an NCT type of thing since we did that with DD but would happily go to one if it's the best way to make friends.

Also, any advice on classes? Think we've probably left it a bit late to register DD for September now, but something for January would be lovely. She adores swimming and her Gymboree classes here.

Alternatively, if anyone lives in Brooklyn and wants a new friend, I'd like to think I'd be a good choice ;)

New York Presbyterian is where it's at when it comes to having a baby in NYC according to my neighbours - three different mothers who lived in Brooklyn (Heights and Park Slope) before migrating to New Jersey had five babies there between them.

They have gymboree classes here. Other than that I would suggest you post on the US thread as there will be someone on there who lives or lived in Brooklyn.

Hi - I've lived in NYC for 11 years and had my first baby in 2010. Where in Brooklyn will you be? We're in Manhattan. There is a lot of stuff to do, some of it expensive, some of it completely free. Lots on online groups for parents. Brooklyn seems to be very kid-friendly - especially Park Slope which is baby-central.
