I'm here!!!!!!!

we arrived on Friday, and even with DH having a day off yesterday for Independence Day, i am desperate to get things happening with nursery/ play groups/ activities for DD (nearly 3yo) and to meet people. (worked full time in London, so it's a bit of a shock adjusting to being a SAHM)

it's near impossible for me to get anywhere, as i don't drive and everything is sooooo spread out!! we are stuck out in Redwood Shores, near San Carlos, which has precisely nothing around here, so i'm reliant on the one bus an hour to make the 10 min trip into downtown San Carlos. The bus seems to come whenever it likes, early/late - whatever!... have managed to catch it 3 times out of 8 attempts so far!!! am organising to take me driving theory test, so i can learn to drive, but it'll take a few weeks and i'm going a bit stir crazy already.

any suggestions on where i can meet people/ find out about kids activities in this area would be hugely appreciated. San Carlos Mothers Club has been recommended, but from what i can see on their website, it doesn't look like there's a lot of action.. there don't seem to be drop in play groups like at home, or at least none that i've chanced upon by wandering the streets.

we went to see two nurseries this morning, one was shut for extended Indep Day holiday (which it didn't mention on their website), and the other was No2800-something San Carlos Avenue, and after 15 mins of fast walking, i was only up to 1600, so i gave up :(

also, we plan to take some trips into San Fran, so any suggestions of places to visit/ things to do with a 3 year old, would be fab

thanks :)

Welcome.
I'm way up north so no idea about San Carlos. Good luck finding a nursery.
For our oldest we went with a Co-op nursery at a local Jewish Temple it worked really well and the parent help out only consisted of me bringing the snacks for the whole class and staying to help once a month or so, there were 20 in the class with two teacher and a parent.
With Ds number 2 we gave up looking, we had moved out of the city and the only nursery in the small town closed right when I finally got him potty trained to be able to attend.
He went straight into Kindergarten at 5 and did really well.
Dd went to the preschool at the local elementary school (new since Ds went to that school too) they took kids from age 2-5 and then they went into the Kindergarten class. It was half days, you could drop off anytime after 7.30am (when the main school started their day) and pick up was noon. they took a pack lunch in to eat before leaving and it only cost $20 a day. As many days a week as you wanted.

Hi Sitting Bull,

sorry i haven't had the chance to log on for a few days. that would be great to meet up, thanks :)

we're actually in Napa this coming Sunday, but we're around all week, or else next weekend..

i had a really lovely network of mum friends in London and i'm struggling a bit... i keep trying to remind myself that it's only been a week, because it feels like a lot longer!

i'll try MyGym on El Camino... we're booked in for a trial at the Penninsula Gymnastics place on Laurel tomorrow, which should be fun.

remind me, how old are your little ones?

i had seen Foster City on the map, but don't know anything about it. is it a nice place to live? there is a serious shortage of rental properties in downtown San Carlos, so we should maybe look at the surrounding areas as well.

i'll PM you with my contact details.

see you soon :)
