Go on then, how? I have a house full of furniture and more importantly have a land rover to get rid of. I have tried Dubizzle, but getting a bit worn down by lunatics and time wasters. Do people go via dealerships? (for the car, obviously, not the furniture). Any other thoughts? I've heard it said that your security guards can help getting rid of furniture, has anyone else done this?

What model/year/mileage is the Land Rover? And how much do you want for it? I can ask around for you. Yes, security guards rehome furniture. Do you have any baby stuff you won't to get rid off?

SilentBoob · 01/06/2012 05:02

Yard sale
ExpatWoman
Spinnies noticeboard
Keep plugging away at Dubizzle
You can sell your car at the big used car lot out past DragonMart.

NicolaSeven · 01/06/2012 05:05

It's a 2007 red LR2 with 100,000 km on it. We've got it on Dubizzle for 60,000 dhs, aiming to achieve around 55,000. it's the one in Springs/Meadows if anyone wants to see pictures. Yes to baby stuff - I had a baby three months ago so I'm bursting at the seams with it!

PS thank you for the info!

Do you know if new tenants are taking your flat? they might want your furniture (at least part of it!)

NicolaSeven · 01/06/2012 05:22

Sadly not, as they're going to refit it over the summer. They don't even want to keep the Bosch dishwasher we bought? It's very annoying.

2nd everything silentboob says. Not sure there is any other realistic options. Obviously there is souq.com but they tend to be even worse than dubizzle IMHO. You need to repost on EW classifieds daily as new ads are always going on, although I'm not sure they approve them at weekends. Try showing items separately with photos. I hate it when it say sofa x dhs. And doesn't give colour or number of seats. Def photos.
For the car can dh send an email round at work? It happens all the time at our place when people have stuff to sell.
Yard sale start very earlier 7am on a Friday, that will get rid of all the soft toys clothes DVDs books any electricals. Make sure you have someone to help plenty of change and eyes in the back of your head. Just lay all the stuff out on blankets or groundsheets in the car port.
Shame you missed trash to treasure at JC today, that might have helped.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 01/06/2012 06:49

I sold our car on Dubizzle a few years back, in the summer of 2009 (dark times, dark times Grin). We had 4 weeks notice we were moving to Asia and our big dread was being left with the car (dealers werent buying them back at that point). I actually think it's a good site but what I would say is that you have to price to sell- search similar vehicles (model, year and mileage) and take DHxk off it. Take some really good photos in good light, and do a side shot, front shot and interiors shot. If it's not financed, state that, because it's an advantage. If it's got a dealer's service record, mention it.

We off'd ours within a week (and buyer was lovely so didnt really mind the crappy price)

You'll usually get a better price in a private sale than via a dealer, although dealers will call and it can be useful to get them to give you a price as then that's your "floor"

NicolaSeven · 01/06/2012 07:47

All very helpful, thank you. (My god, RichMan , that must have been stressful). I have relisted to state that it is unfinanced - and Queen if anyone is interested, it is a 2008 model... crap saleswoman. I think we're being pretty competitive with the price.

I actually didn't realise that EW had a classified section, as I only lurk around the chat boards. I'll try there too.

Have you tried 4 x 4 to sell your car. They give crap prices, but they will probably buy it. We got rid of a lot of stuff via a garage sale and then for bits and pieces like baby clothes etc, we just left them outside the house with a note saying "please take".
Have you thought of contacting the charity which helps labourers in the camps? I think they will take things for familes as well as the men themselves.
Isn't there that bunch called "Take my Junk"? It's a years since i left Dubai, so things may have changed, but they will come and take away furniture etc for charity.
There are shops in Satwa that sell second hand furniture that might be worth a try, but honestly I think Dubizzle, Expatwoman and the notice boards are your best bet if you want to sell things.
I think your Land Rover price is too high. We sold a 2008 top spec Fortuner for less than that 12 months ago and they are in higher demand than LR2's

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 01/06/2012 12:26

I think Dubizzle is good for high value items. I remember though, I sold a load of small items on Dubizzle and that was painful- eg this dude who made a massive deal out of wanting these table tennis bats and balls (worth all of about £20). Wanted me to send more photos (which I declined- I mean, these were not pro equipment or anything). He agreed to buy them anyway, and said he'd send his driver over repeatedly- the driver never called/ showed. Then on the day we had the packers there, he called again. I said "sorry- too late. They're packed" and he went completely mental, accusing me of defrauding him etc etc. Quite funny in retrospect but a bit "wtf" at the time.

Windandsand · 02/06/2012 03:58

Yard sale, dubizzle, people don't seem to do second hand much in Dubai ! Am always hopeful to be moving to uk so don't buy anything to big to ship or that I care about... Can you ship anything back? Or do you have to pay your own shipping? Quite envious you going back to uk. Lots of people leaving and selling cars tbh, you might have to drop your price...

NicolaSeven · 02/06/2012 04:59

We are shipping some stuff back (at our own expense, goddamnit!) But I don't want to ship everything back. Regards the price of the car, we're already about 20,000 less than anything equivalent on Dubizzle. All very painful?

Are you going back to the UK at least for the summer windandsand? I'm very sad to be missing the Diamond Jubilee?

OP posts:
NicolaSeven · 02/06/2012 05:08

Oh, PS, good idea about the labourer charity. You don't happen to know what it's called do you?

OP posts:
Windandsand · 02/06/2012 07:22

Daffy, yes going back for summer but dreading it as I really hate comj g back here. Really depresses me tbh. Dh just says if we were in the uk now there would be no work and we would be eating cardboard:( Think he is exaggerating....

Am always clearing out place out in the hope dh comes home, announces he has been sacked and we have to leave. And it's not our home. It's our rented accommodation .

mateysmum · 02/06/2012 09:58

sorry can't remember the name of the charity, but if you search expatwoman and perhaps the Gulf News archives, I think you'll find it.

IdontknowwhyIcare · 02/06/2012 10:46

The charity is called Take My Junk, however he seems to take hig vlaue items and electrical, clothes and blankets. Other stuff appears a no no.
If you are selling a vac I would be interested :-)

NicolaSeven · 02/06/2012 12:23

Idontknow you can have our vac if you don't mind waiting until June 27? It's a Panasonic MC 4620,

windandsand I know how you feel, I was miserable for a really long time here. I did come round to it a bit, it's a very easy life, but we decided to make the jump before our kids get to school age. We may very well be eating cardboard as dh's job is not yet in the bag...

Anyway, I'd better go and soothe furious dh who has just spent an hour waiting in carpark for buyer from Sharjah, who when we called, hadn't even set off yet. Despite phoning us twice to check we were definitely meeting him. Why are there so many mad people on dubizzle??

OP posts:
IdontknowwhyIcare · 03/06/2012 05:59

Thanks very much I can certainly wait and I promise I turn up on time. No Insh'Allah time in this house ;-)
Post again this morning on EW classifieds. Even join up if you not and promote your stuff shamelessly on the forum as well.

barbie1 · 03/06/2012 06:20

We did the very same thing last month. Lucky for us our friends wanted the fj so the biggest purchase was sorted out. While parked in spinneys car park I used to have loads of cards left on the screen telling me to call if I wanted a cash buyer. Have a sneaky look for them on other cars and maybe call them?
For furniture and unwanted baby things, we had a farewell BBQ and told all of our friends to make us an offer if they wanted anything from the house! It was fun and easy to do. Everything we wanted to get rid of went apart from our sofa and some very strange calls from the people on dubizzle...do they not know its bloody rude to call at midnight??? Hmm
Best of luck on your return, I really, really am missing Dubai Sad

NicolaSeven · 19/06/2012 15:44

Well, we've sold most of our stuff, including the car. Thanks to all for the advice.
Yard sale's on Friday if anyone is interested from 7:30 AM in Springs one, Street six, Villa seven. Idon'tknowwhy - I have pm'd you to arrange collection of vac.
