Justabout - I think DH would be tempted to buy, but realistically I think we'll probably be renting again if we want to stay in the area where we are now.

We've had no official word yet on their timing, but I think we'll start keeping an eye out for places.

Sibble · 07/06/2012 08:29

We have just bought a house that was previously rented, we were told by the real estate agent at negotiation that if we wanted the tenants to leave before the end of their contract we would have to look at 'buying them out' or compensating them in some way. So I would negotiate too, you have been inconvenienced at the very least.

Bobbish · 07/06/2012 09:14

Even if it is fixed term, the new owner only needs to give 42 days' notice as in a periodic tenancy - see this section 58(1)(d)

www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1986/0120/latest/DLM95526.html

worth phoning the DBH helpline 0800 TENANCY for more info for your case though

Bobbish · 07/06/2012 09:15

Oh - and if they want to open homes, there are safeguards for you in what is reasonable and you will be entitled to compensation if they want you to go out for the day for open homes etc

Bobbish · 07/06/2012 09:16

*should be entitled to compensation - can depend on what everyone thinks is 'reasonable'!

thelittlestkiwi · 07/06/2012 09:22

I'm not sure this applies in this case- the Tenancy page suggests otherwise.

www.dbh.govt.nz/tenancy-change-landlord-tenant

Bobbish · 07/06/2012 09:32

ah - sorry - i think you are right TLK. It is only mortgagee sales where they can give notice

vvviola · 07/06/2012 23:09

Thanks everyone. Good to get an idea of where we stand. I'll let DH do the negotiating. I'm too much of a softie & I'll agree to anything just to keep everyone happy Grin

And, to complete the week (with MIL arriving tomorrow for the weekend), DD2s skin prick tests came back with a strong reaction to dairy and milder ones to egg and peanut. It never rains but it pours... Sad

Shells · 07/06/2012 23:56

What a crap week vvviola. Poor you. I agree about landlords. Have been shafted so many times. But when you're not in a position to buy, then you're stuck. Crap isn't it.

You might want to check out the allergy new zealand website. They might be helpful, I know they were when ds1 was first diagnosed. I received alot of helpful recipes etc....

shelscrape · 08/06/2012 03:02

The gluten free and allergy show is on this weekend in auckland vvviola - website here might be some useful stuff for you there.

ScroobiousPip · 08/06/2012 12:17

Hi vvviola, just seen your posts. Just to confirm, as you are on a fixed term tenancy and the landlord is selling voluntarily, he cannot require you to leave until the end of the fixed term. He can still sell the property - but only if the buyer is prepared to take you on as a sitting tenant on the existing tenancy agreement.

Having said that, you may be able to use it to your advantage. For example, you could agree to relinquish your tenancy early if your landlord pays all your moving costs (and maybe some extra for the inconvenience factor of putting up with open home etc).

Good luck!

thelittlestkiwi · 09/06/2012 05:11

Lolly- Nosh have some waitrose biscuits for $3.49 a pack. I've got some jammy dodgers. Yum.

vvviola · 09/06/2012 07:38

Settling down to watch the Ireland v All Blacks game soon. We had tickets but couldn't go (long MIL-related story). Feeling an odd mix of homesickness & excitement (& annoyance at not being there)

Allergy show was good. I have discovered that almond milk is vile & rice milk is sweet, watery but ok.

And thanks to whoever mentioned the nice biscuits - MIL brought cheesecake which I obviously can't have, but I've got some yummy biscuits to keep me going Grin

lollystix · 11/06/2012 10:14

1st day at work today. All good but hate being the new girl. Keep thinking I have so much to learn and my brain is mashed right now. Came home to tidy house and kids through their tea thanks to lovely nanny. Very different from the crazy run around after work in the UK.

So help me please. DNiece being christened soon and need to send gift. Something keepsy and beautiful as SiL is posh. Links of London in the UK would have done the job but where do I start here? Budget circa $50-$100.

WhatSheSaid · 11/06/2012 10:21

If Links of London is where you would have shopped why not order something off their website and get it delivered to them?

lollystix · 11/06/2012 10:28

could do but my dad is here just now so I thought I could get something and send it back with him.

Can I have an AIBU rant here too? DH has said three time tonight whilst cooking dinner 'Do you have an onion?, do you have any of that cheese?, do you have some tomato paste?' It got my goat as it infers the cupboards and their contents are somehow my domain (I would feel affronted even if I hadn't just gone back to work). I said 'no WE don't have any onions' and he said 'I'm just asking, don't give me any of that suffragette, feminist bollocks'. Have I married a twunt or AIBU?

thelittlestkiwi · 11/06/2012 10:49

You could send something greenstone for when she is older?

Tell OH that all intelligent women are feminists and to read this:

We did the whale and dolphin trip on Sunday and saw three Orca. I cannot explain how happy this has made me. It's the second time I've done the trip and they only see them once a month. I got the tickets off of grabone for $59 each so we saved a packet too.

Also booked our trip back to the UK- we got a great price - $4200 for me and DD. I'm excited and dreading it at the same time.

Littlest - where did you see the whales and dolphins? Sounds fab

thelittlestkiwi · 11/06/2012 11:10

Just off of Auckland harbour. You go out about 15 mins and dolphins appear. We saw Orca, loads of dolphins and a Brydes whale. The gannets are very impressive too. It's normally an expensive trip ($160 per adult) so worth hanging out for the grabone offer that they do every so often.

DD spent all evening pretending to be a baby orca and making DH chase her.

longwhitecloud · 11/06/2012 14:27

Hi all,

Just catching up on the thread....miserable day in London (miserable summer in fact, raining again. The sun lasted about 5 days). DD1 watching shrek, DD2 asleep and me doing the grocery shop and MN catch up.

vvviola lots going on for you...shame you couldn't get to the rugby (not sure it would have cheered you up? Grin ). I hope you get your housing sorted.

We are plodding along here. We leave on the 20th. We decided to stay going via LA. We booked fairly late and seats are reasonably hard to come by so didn't want to chance it.

A fair few viewings on our flat but no offers. I will be glad to get this trip over and done with, then at least we can start planning one way or the other. Being in limbo is quite stressful.

Amazing to see a dolphins, a whale and orca - very cool!

Shells · 11/06/2012 20:55

Very cool to see Orcas and dolphins. We have seen them a few times off the coast here in Wellington - just from the road and its SO exciting.

And well done for getting back to work Lolly (as for DH YANBU - tell him to get a grip). I am so admiring of mothers who work full time. I have had a few busy working days lately (work very part time) and it has done me in and the house has fallen apart.

Yes I would get greenstone or bone carving. Art gallery and museum shops often have nice stuff like that. Or a classic wooden buzzy bee?

Bobbish · 12/06/2012 05:17

Whale trip sounds amazing. I went on the whale watch in kaikoura and spent the whe 2 hours wanting to die I was do sea sick. Couldn't even open my eyes. That was a nice waste of money!

My dh does the same re food. His latest one is to be moaning that "there still isn't any garlic salt. Every time I look there still isn't any" etc etc. obviously the garlic salt fairies are on strike.

Dh became a kiwi last night! Had his ceremony at the town hall. Now we just need to get his passport.
