Sorry - not prospering...

WhatSheSaid · 04/06/2012 18:49

I think AB considered Titirangi when first moving here but was put off by the thought of windy roads and steep driveways iirc.

I live very close to Titirangi, it's lovely.

thelittlestkiwi · 04/06/2012 21:51

I like the vibe out West but it does have a slightly 'wild' feel that may not suit everyone. I think you'd be best to have a look AB. Perhaps runs some figures then come up for a good reckie to check out places you would like to live?

Auckland is the London of NZ so Devonport/Ponsonby/St Heliers are probably the equivalent of Kensington. Like London, there are nice places to live outside the centre, you just have find one you like and commute further.

Yes,I remember Titirangi...it looked lovely but did it have very high winds or something? I forget now,we looked at so many places!
justabout thank you so much for your kind offer. I think you may reconsider when I tell you the reality would be all the noisy beaver clan...plus me, vomiting on a regular basis! Will you hold my hair back?!Wink

We must all have a meet up at some point, though!Smile

Well it's pretty bloody windy today but no, in general it's not especially windy.

Regretting not having a dryer today - wet washing everywhere - miss radiators too!

lollystix · 05/06/2012 06:47

I hear you whatshesaid. I have 3 loads of wet washing from the Waihi weekend -21kg of it. Think I may be heading to Glen Innes tonight to befriend the dryers.Sad

I'm sorry to interrupt the wet washing chat (I have wet washing too and I have a dryer!!) I had a terrifying experience earlier!! I was going to pick dd up from school. So went to put an arm in my mac and omething sharp scratched me! What the effin jeff was that, thinks I? Peer down the sleeve, and see 2 EYES LOOKING BACK AT ME!!! I screamed the blimmin' house down! Spent about 10 mins picking up coat with a hanger and examining it,then saw it by the drawers (must have flung it out when I lashed coat down on floor!) Big bloody Weta! Eyw eyw eyw eyw eyw...

lollystix · 05/06/2012 11:34

AB - I feel sick now. That's scary. Eywwww.....

shelscrape · 05/06/2012 11:42

Ewwwww to the Weta AB - they are effing huuuugge! I've seen a few skulking around, but never had one in the house.

Fab news about free month at MOTAT - DS has been pestering for another visit, must be at least 6 weeks since we last went.

Can't help with auckland areas and rent I'm afraid. I just use Devonport as a free car park whenever I need to get into the city centre, only $11 return on the ferry, much cheaper than city centre parking Smile

Things are finally looking up on the job front for me, had an interview last week and looks promising and I've got a date for my admission ceremony at the High Court .... so bored at home, I need adult conversation!

AngryBeaver · 05/06/2012 11:48

I was pretty shaken!!!IT WAS IN MY COAT!!!!Aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhh! And yes,it was HUGE. I battered it with dh's trainer? The fecker just bounced and came at me!!!! I sprayed mortein in it's face for about 20 seconds? It.is.still.alive!
It is under (well, half under, not all of it would bloody fit) a glass, waiting for dh to come home and remove it. I cannot go to bed.
I'm so tired, the littlest is under the weather and kept me up loads last night.
I need bed...but like feck I'm sharing my room with that beast!

OP posts:
lollystix · 05/06/2012 12:01

AB - I think you're supposed to be nice to them - aren't they protected or something? I'm not sure mortein in his face is allowed but I probably would have done the same. Just been to see my boys and there's an odd beetle in the wall but nothing like your friend.

Shels-what's the job?

shelscrape · 05/06/2012 12:12

Yes, I think some species of Weta are protected, but not all of them are... I've pushed them off the patio with a broom before, but that's the closest I've got to one. DS says they come into his classroom sometimes and they get scooped up with a dustpan and brush and get deposited in the trees.

The job is with a local law firm ... i am soooo looking forward to getting back into Court - as a lawyer that is, not a defendant!

AngryBeaver · 05/06/2012 20:19

lolly...to be fair,I launched The Attack, before I had identified the assailent. It may have been whilst I was spraying the mortein in it's big weta face, that I realised!

Well done on the job,shels...and top tip re devonport parking!!

OP posts:
lollystix · 05/06/2012 23:32

LOL - his weta face. I've only seen dead ones pinned to a board in Auckland museum.

Shels -I remember now cos you helped me with DHs driving incident. 3 points and £60 fine - very lucky.

thelittlestkiwi · 05/06/2012 23:47

16 out of 70 species are protected- and weta are really cool creatures. They are bigger than some European bats and mice!

Saying that, I killed one by accident in a horrific squashing incident which involved me trying to pull a leg of one for quite some time before I realised what it was. Btw, weta blood is black. Blush

Congrats on job movement Shels.

Argh. Landlady came around today with estate agent. Looks like they are thinking of selling. Not sure where that leaves us.

Bobbish · 06/06/2012 22:14

oooh that weta thing is horrible. I had one of those big black tunnel web spiders climb over the sofa and down my neck once. Horrible. DH (accidently) ran over a weta with the lawn mower and it was still alive. Not sure why they need protection - they are pretty much indistructable.

Bad news on the house vviola - dont forget the landlord has to give you 42 days' notice and can only do that once a sale has been agreed (i used to work in a field dealing with the residential tenacies act so know it quite well - let me know if you need any advice)

vvviola · 07/06/2012 04:02

Bobbish - I might just be looking for advice. Landlord confirmed today they'll be putting house on market. We've been offered first refusal, but it's beyond our budget. And even if it was within our budget we'd only be buying it because it was less hassle not because we love it.

Sad

Just when things were getting a bit settled.

We don't know what the time scale is yet, but I guess we're on the move. Again.

We're particularly peeved as they made a big song & dance about only wanting long term tenants... and we're only in the place 4 months AngryAngry

thelittlestkiwi · 07/06/2012 04:28

What sort of tenancy are you on vvviola? If it is fixed then they can't give you notice just to sell. If it's rolling then they can.

vvviola · 07/06/2012 04:34

It's fixed for a year (until next February). So does that mean we can insist on staying til then, even if they sell?

Although, in a way, if we're going to have to move we'd rather do it before my parents arrive in December than have to house hunt and move while they are here.

thelittlestkiwi · 07/06/2012 04:43

www.dbh.govt.nz/pub-tenancy-information

According to this they really can't just give you notice. Honestly, I feel NZ landlords just see tenants as a way to pay their mortgage and have no respect for your rights- look at the number of people on this thread who've been in the same situation.

You are facing a lot of costs to move- removal costs, mail redirection, agents fees for a new property. I would have a good think about what would be best for you. Would you prefer to stay till the end of your tenancy or move now if you know you have to leave in 8 months anyway? Then negotiate.
