Anyone in Mexico City?

Just wondering if there are any MNers in this part of the world? My DD is 3 months old and I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to meet other mums (most of our friends aren't parents), there doesn't seem to be much of a culture of playgroups, mum and baby groups etc., most people just seem to drop off their baby at nursery and go off to work. I have seen some postpartum yoga classes but they are just for the mums, without children! Not quite what I had in mind... Also would be great to meet other expat and/or English speaking mums out here!

Hello. I'm in Mexico City at the moment. Although I am afraid I am one of those mums who drop their dc off at school and go to work all day.
I agree that there is no playgroup culture of any kind here. The thing is that most people have extended families and do their socializing within them. Pm me and tell me where you are if you want. My dc are 2 and 4, so a bit bigger than yours.

You have to remember that there is no maternity leave here either (just a sick leave of a total of 12 weeks, 6 weeks before you give birth and six after). Most women have no choice about going back to work. Nurseries are plentiful for this reason. Plus, amongst the women who don't have to work because they are well enough off, it is very common for them to have a full- time nanny on hand. This means that mother and baby things are unnecessary, these women socialize as they have always done.
It's just not at all like the UK I'm afraid.

Hi Catherine. DH and I have our own business so I'm lucky enough to be taking a bit of time off and DD will go to nursery when she is 6 months old, I know that maternity leave for most people is much less. Even so, I had assumed that there would be more activities for the stay at home mums, but you're right, they do seem to have full time nannies and they don't seem to let a child 'interfere' with their lifestyle (huge generalisation I know but just what I've seen). I've been living here 8 years (married to a Mexican), so I'm familiar with many aspects of life here but parenting is new territory! I hear of what friends in the UK are doing with their children and remember my own childhood and just assumed it would be easier to find similar activities.
I will pm you...

Hi I lived in DF for 4 years from 2003-2007 and had 2 babies there..there were loads of playgroups through the Newcomers Club of Mexico City...is that still going? There were at least 2/3 activities a week going on. I made loads of friends thought them. HTH

I have heard of Newcomers but didn't know they had playgroups, I will check it out, thanks!
