So this is an unashamed venting thread, so back away now if you would love to live in Oz or do, and love it.

Short story, back a year after a decade in the UK and am still adjusting, I guess.

Aus has changed a lot, and mostly in ways I don't like. Just want to get a few things off my chest so I can stop muttering and get on with it.

First whinge: service - Australians think they are famed for it, but it is almost universally shit. Unattentive, almost resentful, and clearly beneath the person working in a shop, funky cafe or suburban small business. Want to go elsewhere because they haven't looked at you when serving you, or acknowledged keeping you waiting, brought the wrong order, not brought your order, or overcharged you. They couldn't care less.... And then I keep hearing how dire things are in retail. Any wonder!?

Second whinge: racism. I spent a decade swearing it didn't exist in multicultural Australia. Does it what? I hear curry muncher and noodle all the time.

Anyhow, that is two off my chest - I just feel that Australia is so busy boasting about itself and being self congratulatory that it is failing to realise it has taken it's eye of things that count - like truly world-class childcare and education. Standards are low and I reckon we - because I am now here for good unfortunately - will eventually regret how smug Australians are...

Sorry, came too late to the thread a few weeks ago to but in but have wanted to vent ever since...

You're right about the racism, especially towards aborigines.
Say what you like about UK, there is not the, same level of racism here, compared to a lot of other countries.
We are a very tolerant nation.

TeamCersei · 08/08/2017 09:22

The number of times I have sat at nice middle class dinner parties wanting to scream "you no longer have a fucking empire, get over it" are many

You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder. Confused
If those are you're,thought processes, it shows that you have an inferiority complex fir some reason. It's hardly the fault of your dinner companions.

TeamCersei · 08/08/2017 09:34

It tnever ceases to amaze me how often you find these vile, hateful, uninformed rants from a sad Brits with a massive chip on the shoulder

Your post on the previous page is so long. I classify that as a rant.
Also, I think you'll find that the original OP is an Aussie.

Out of interest, why did you revive a zombie thread? Confused
You seem very as angry with your life. Try living in the present instead of reviving zombie threads and getting yourself in a tiz.

TeamCersei · 08/08/2017 09:44

Who activated an old thread?

Necronominon did

It's bizarre.
They revive a thread and rant that Brita have a chip on their shoulder,s in the meantime, this poster has a revived a zombie thread, posted at least 5 long paragraphs -
you guessed,it ! To have a RANT! or should that be whinge Hmm

necronomicon · 08/08/2017 10:28

The common list of complaints about infrastructure and services needing further development, expensive prices, public transport being inadequate etc. are all complains you'll hear from every Australian. No different to what any foreigner would say. Nobody here is saying that it's the greatest country in the world. Furthermore, the idea that we are a bunch of mean, horrible, arrogant, unfriendly, racist bastards is baloney. It's not constructive and healthy to look down on every other country and it's people as inferior to you. That caused world wars.

necronomicon · 08/08/2017 10:29

I did not realize it was a zombie thread. It seemed like it was still active to me.

MyheartbelongstoG · 08/08/2017 10:34

I lived in the UK for 19 years then had to return to my own country due to a family bereavement then went back to the UK. I lasted less than 10 months as I absolutely hated it!

I couldn't stand the people and it was just miserable so i left again and never looked back.

Hopefully everything will fall into place for you op.

farangatang · 08/08/2017 10:48

I feel your pain OP - it's hard moving 'back' but realising that how you've changed through previous experiences, and positive experiences elsewhere can suddenly colour how you perceive where you're now living.

Nowhere is perfect, but if you really hate the place, do what you can to leave. However, if you're 'stuck' then it would be good for your own sanity to try and remember (discover?) some of the good things about where you are. If there's anything you can do to change the negatives, go for it! (both much easier said than done)

Good luck and I hope there are happier times ahead for you.

echt · 08/08/2017 11:42

Seriously, this thread needs to fuck off.

echt · 08/08/2017 11:46

There are fucked up things in Australia, but this thread is old, and if people feel the need to vent about the place, they should start their own threads.

Fallen444 · 23/01/2019 03:40

I really hate living in Australia...I wanted to come here and left everything we had.
Now I'm lost and frustrated .... Australia is a country have nothing inside empty, boasting ,proud itself , crazy weather and cunning people all overthere..they wasted our money and only gave TR though we had excellent qualifications...without any beifites we started our journey with lots of hope...we have two small kids..my husband is a bussiness analyst who successfully completed his education in United States of America...then my husband got a job ad we were very happy but then after first fortnight they refused to pay my husband and we had no choice no money did odd jobs...but rental is so high and school fees also a big problem...the company closed and we waited 4 months to get the wage.first they told they have no money and so many stories. My husband worked there almost 3 months without a wages...we were really suffering at that time...only God helped us...not only this we experienced really horrible things... Most people are very cunning .they don't have perticuler health services..it's a mess...my country is a heaven and I'm a great fool who left that...I wanna go home... don't know what to do...

llangennith · 23/01/2019 10:18

ZOMBIE THREAD!

Fallen444 · 23/01/2019 13:16

Aussie food are yuk...cruel and wicked people like mixed pickle...

WanttoliveinOz · 23/01/2019 17:54

Just seen this pop up under mine about relocating and laughing my head off at the changes a few years can make - no one on the planet would call UK stable or not racist these days, we've pinned our flag to the mast very clearly!

EatCheese · 22/05/2019 08:55

What the hell. 8 year old thread, revived after 6 years and this year again. Might as well add my 2c.

I’m Australian. Born and grew up in Sydney. Moved overseas for 18 years (UK + few countries in Asia). In middle age, have recently moved back to Sydney as a reasonable job came up and so my kids can spend a bit of time with their grandparents while they are still around.

I don’t like it. Will give Australia a go for a bit longer then reconsider my plans.

Aus has good weather and Sydney has a beautiful harbour (and all the other waterways on top of the harbour) and beautiful beaches. But that is all it has.

I find you must do outdoor/nature activities, or it is quite boring. I find Australians quite insular and firmly in the belief that Australia is the best. In reality it is just a pleasant but boring place in a geographical backwater.

The shopping is crap.

The service is crap... for example I’m on a biz trip in Brisbane now. I was asked how my day was when I checked in. I always get asked this by people in the service industry in Aus, but the service is always crap. I’m never going to see you again, I don’t want to describe how my day was. The crap part of today’s hotel service was they gave me a room key which didn’t work and I had to trudge down to reception again with my suitcase to get another key. Something always goes wrong.

The public transport is crap. I dislike being forced to drive to get around.

There are a lot of petty rules.

Australians are not relaxed as they believe, in general they are quite uptight.

The standard of driving is abysmal and often outright dangerous. I used to enjoy motor biking in Europe but I’m wary of doing it in Sydney due to the amount of snap lane changes performed without looking properly.

Overall I like living in Europe or Asia a lot more. When the weather is bad, there is still more to do and see than you have time available. The weather is the only thing going for Australia.

DinkyTie · 01/06/2019 00:34

I too am Australian, just moved home after 10 years.

I do recognise some of what you're saying @EatCheese, but I'm trying to embrace it as a move to a different country (not my home country iykwim) and I try to find the positives and not focus on the negatives.

I'm in Melbourne which has a different vibe to Sydney. I don't think I could have settled if we'd landed in Sydney. Dh and I lived there years ago and it wasn't for me then.

I don't think we'll stay forever, but I'm really enjoying watching the relationship my DC are building with their GP and wider family.

The PT here is shit. I used to miss driving in London, now we drive everywhere. We specifically bought within a 10 min walk to station as we wanted to stick with one car. Everyone laughed and said we'd be getting that second car soon. We haven't...yet.

The shopping is ok, it's just expensive. Everything is expensive. You're paid a lot because you bloody need it!

I also realise this is an old thread but for those reading now curious about a move to Aus.

Irtaza · 03/08/2022 10:31

Hi,

I moved to Australia for studies and I thought living here would be easy as there was not much thread regarding guidance of challenges you will be facing here except Moving to Australia for studies.

Living here is not so easy ,expenses are high and finding a good place is almost impossible.

echt · 04/08/2022 04:31

Zombie thread.

2u2me2me2u · 04/08/2022 05:27

thestringcheeseincident · 05/10/2011 08:27

Yes leave then.
They won't miss you.

Come back to the UK, never any racism here or banking crisis or riots. It's all fantastic.

This! Well said @thestringcheeseincident

marvellousmaple · 04/08/2022 06:48

ZOMBIE ( and Australia is great - just like lots of other countries).

MichaelMumsnet · 04/08/2022 06:54
