Calling NZ MNetters - Christchurch area! What is the situation at the moment re earthquake damage and red zones etc?

HELP!!!
We are arriving on a month long visit to NZ, starting in Christchurch on 24th July - have been hearing horror stories of the "red zone" and that large parts of the city are now closed or cordoned off. We are backpacking with the DDs 9 and 7 and would love a clearer idea of the situation without the drama!

Equally if anyone fancies an impromptu meet up that would be fantastic!

Thanks Zachary - Will have a read of that - have been looking at the Lonely Planet Site but there is nothing like the words of real life people for the real picture!
