Life Insurance- what do others do?

We moved overseas and had our first baby and now think we should get life insurance- we have no idea how long we will be here. If we can possibly avoid return to the UK we will but no doubt we will have to go back there at some point.

Do people just take out a short term policy in their country of residence, if they did not get insurance when in the home country?

I can get it here in the US so think we will just do that on a low term but if and when we move back we will have to start a policy again which will cost more. If we get it from UK we have to transfer funds to cover the expense every year as we have no sterling income anymore.

We have expat life insurance that covers us wherever we are but it's very pricy compared to local insurance.
