Abruzzo - Italy

We want to buy a home in Abruzzo, with a view to living there full time. Unfortunately we live near Manchester and there is no direct flight. The flights as far as i can make out, are all from London Stanstead and there is no flight from Manchest to London Stanstead.
A solution to this could be to fly direct to Rome and then drive to Abruzzo but im wondering how practical this would be with 4 children! Anyone knew any solutions?

How often are you likely to fly home? If it is once a year then it is a pain but doable. It is only 2 hours.

Would you be flying into Fiumicino airport or Ciampino? The latter is closer to Abruzzo and you would avoid travelling around Rome.

i dont know tbh, i would have to check which one goes direct to msnchester- maybe they both do?
when you say 2 hours, do you mean the flight or the drive from Rome to Abruzzo? Do you know how long it would take driving? Im not sure how many times we would come back, but with 4 kids we have grandparents who would want to come oit as much as possible so we have them to think of too. Ive lookef onto Le Marche as well but think it would be the same problem?

Hi I live in Rome and am from near Manchester. Jet 2 fly from Manchester to Fiumicino and Ryanair from Liverpool to Ciampino. Be aware of the fact though that Ryanair stopped their flight during the winter and Jet 2 did the same the other year. It depends where in Abruzzo you are thinking of? Are you thinking of the mountains or sea? You can get into Abruzzo from Rome pretty easily. A lot of Romans have weekend places they go to for the weekend in Abruzzo so its very do-able journey wise.

We were in the Abruzzo area on holiday, and left in the morning for a midday flight, so it can only have been a couple of hours drive.

Good point about the flights stopping in winter - we are the other way around, flights start in winter to Geneva so you have to be careful about planning around that.

I would start by looking into where you want to buy, and getting the other practicalities sorted. How far you are from the airport is less important, imo than where you live and what facilities/schools are like.

Thanks for all the info. We are a little undecided yet, as to what the complete plan of action is. Dp is taking voluntary redunancy from armed forces and the plan is to move abroad using the money and rent our home in England. But we're debating whether to do it straight away, or whether to use it as a holiday home for a year or two first. The flight situation is less of a problem for the first option, but can see it being a nightmare for the 2nd. My kids are 10, twins at 9 months and one on the way, so it wouldn't be easy. I read somewhere about trains\ buses between rome and abruzzo, does anyone know anything about that? Only other option would be hire car, cos cant see how we could leave our own car in Rome why we visited England?
I'd rather be near the beach than the mountains but the ideal is a farmhouse 30 mins from both. I havent got as far as looking into the schools yet, pointless until i can get my head around the logistics. but it would definately be a deciding factor, especially for the 10yr old.
