DH who gets these things has had a tsunami alert for Japan. Does anyone have any more info? Itsjust breaking news about the massive earthquake at the moment.

OP posts:

yes, they said some of them have shut down, which is worrying because they obviously "felt" the quake. But still saying "no information on leakage"

MrsChemist · 11/03/2011 08:49

My friend is in Osaka, and we've not heard anything. She's probably contacting relatives first. Thanks for updating on Osaka Audi.

TotorosOcarina · 11/03/2011 08:50

My God :(

My thoughts areith anyone affected by this :(

I have a masssive tsunami phobia, daft living here I know, but I really do.

sakura · 11/03/2011 08:50

they're being investigated for leakage. I hope they wouldn't dare to keep anything secret

TotorosOcarina · 11/03/2011 08:56

Those images are crazy. I think we are so used to seeing things like that and knowing its a film and not real. the thought thats genuinly happening somewhere is so scary and awful :(

sakura · 11/03/2011 08:58

It's going to sound stupid but Japan needs more trees in its cities. More trees and less roads

BeenBeta · 11/03/2011 09:03

Red Cross saying that the tsunami wave crossing the Pacific is now higher than some Pacific Islands.

sakura · 11/03/2011 09:08

amazing that with today's IT other countries can be warned hours in advance

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 11/03/2011 09:08

Totoros I have a tsunami and tidal wave phobia too. (Hence living on top of a hill in the Midlands, UK!) I wish I hadn't seen that video coverage on BBC. I can't stop crying at the thought of those people in cars trying to get away. :(

I hope everyone here and their friends and family are OK, and that the death toll in minimal. :(

I read an article a few days ago saying the moon is the closest it has been to earth for 20 years. The article speculated the gravitational pull of the moon could cause an 'earth tide' that distorts the earth surface and trigger earthquake and volcanic activity.

Astonising this was 1000x stronger than the Christchurch earthquake but luckily further out to sea.

Me, DW and DSs are travelling to Jpan, Australia, NZ, Pacific Islands and West Coat of USA in summer.
I know it is irrational but have to admit we are now worried.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 11/03/2011 09:21

what on earth do people do if they live on the Pacific islands that are lower than the wave? get on a boat and go out to sea?

sakura · 11/03/2011 09:22

your worries are rational, but what can you do? you can't cancel on the basis of what if?

Is the close moon a phase?

Unrulysun · 11/03/2011 09:23

Sakura was just about to pm you. Glad to see you here :)

I think the tsunami is going to be the worst. BBC news have a helicopter on it and it is huge. They're saying it's higher than some of the islands it's heading for. :(

sakura · 11/03/2011 09:24

I've got no idea, steth Sad I know that mexico and Hawaii are getting organized

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 11/03/2011 09:24

are there more quakes to come?

Beta, I read that about the moon as well. Except the thing I read presented it as 'loony internet theories' - sounds perfectly plausible to me that it is a factor, given there is so much we don't know about what triggers earthquakes.

my db is in Japan, have heard from him that his house is only slightly more untidy now (arf), hope he'll keep updating us.

BeenBeta · 11/03/2011 09:26

The people who survived the 2004 Boxing Day Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 were often out at sea. Fishermen came home to find their families all dead. Sad

sakura · 11/03/2011 09:26

aftershocks are still coming

Unrulysun · 11/03/2011 09:27

...which Beenbeta has already said.

I don't know- you'd have to be a long way out to sea to ride it wouldn't you? :(

this footage is horrible :(

BeenBeta · 11/03/2011 09:29

seth - the news is saying there have been 13 aftershocks over 6.0 on the Richter scale. The news flash saying they are execting another big one imminent and a nuclear emergency declared.

I thought the 'earth tide' theory was also a bit loony but agree with you. We hardly know for sure.

MmeLindt · 11/03/2011 09:30

Jesus. My mother just told me about this. Watched the news. It is terrifying.

Hope all your loved ones are safe.

perhapstomorrow · 11/03/2011 09:32

Oh bloddy hell. This is awful. My thoughts are with anyone affected and to all in the pacific basin who are now at risk. :(

whysolate · 11/03/2011 09:33

Devastating. Sad

BeenBeta · 11/03/2011 09:34

sakura - yes it is a phase but it is a longish phase that comes and goes over a 20 year cyclic period.

We havent booked the tickets yet.....

sakura · 11/03/2011 09:34

WTF is a nuclear emergency?

meditrina · 11/03/2011 09:34

I'm watching on SKY. It's terrifying that the estimated height of the tsunami is higher than the land of some Pacific Islands in its path.
