ideas for getting a smallish (say a van load) of stuff from germany to UK?

We want to move some furniture, say a few peaces of furniture. How can we do it without it costing $$$$$$$$?

Could you hire the van and drive it yourself?

Call one of the larger firms (like Pickfords) and see if they could do a part load on a return leg.

we thought about van hire, which would be ok if we could just dump van in UK, but if we had to return it ro Germany, we'd have to do a massive retun tripin just a weekend which would be too much, and we wouldn't be able to do that with kids, which would mean just 1 of us doing it which is even more too much.

There have got to be folks in Germany who would be prepared to do this for you, surely?

Contact a moving firm which deals with the army moves and see if you can get space in a lorry already doing a Germany to UK run? Whereabouts in Germany/uk are you going? Are you near any army bases?

Whoops just seen op. pieces, not peaces or even bits. I'll check out removal companies. Going from Munich to Brighton. Really too much if we'd have to do van hire, in terms of exhaustion. Don't want to spend loads, cos it's all pretty old or shabby stuff, so if it cost too much, it'd probably end up cheaper to dump and buy again brand new, but that seems so wasteful and a shame iyswim.

We had a whole flat to move from Switzerland to Belgium. The moving men had lots of part loads from all over mainland Europe.

I should add, they said it was very common to collect anywhere between 5 and 10 boxes.

Ernest, I did this the other way around - from UK to Germany half a van load of stuff very, very cheap. A company from Berlin picked my stuff up on the way back from a delivery to Scotland and dropped it off in Hannover on their way to Berlin. Cost about 300? from Lake district to Hannover.

You could try here for offers or you could email a few removal firms around Munich for Beiladung offers - you'll get ceheaper offers if you can be flexible with your dates too.
