I was looking for thumbwitch's recipe for that cake and found the old thread has disappeared so Linzer and I thought we'd resurrect it!

OP posts:

Thanks for the reminder stranded - rocket hasn't come up so far but coriander has, quite a few times; I'd completely forgotten about it being called cilantro in the USA. One question though - do you also talk about "cilantro seeds" and "ground cilantro"? I'm sure I read somewhere that cilantro is used for the fresh plant and coriander for the seeds.

tadjennypumpkinpie · 30/11/2010 21:17

Just looked in cupboard and do indeed have some 'coriander seed, ground' in a jar there! HTH

LinzerTorte · 30/11/2010 21:21

Aha, thanks jenny! I'd already sent the first 12 pages to the proofreader before I'd realised about coriander/cilantro, but I've e-mailed him and am hoping he's American so that he'll know what to do!

tadjennypumpkinpie · 30/11/2010 21:37

That sounds like a real professional set-up. The little bits of translation I've done, I've just signed a form in front of a notary saying I've done it to the best of my ability! Hmm I could be rubbish for all they know and will certainly have made some mistakes! Oh well!

tadjennypumpkinpie · 30/11/2010 21:42

It is quite amusing that you have ladies across the globe checking their cupboards the for the correct translation though! Grin

LinzerTorte · 30/11/2010 22:00

Isn't MN great? You've all been so helpful with this translation; I don't know what I've have done without this thread. Grin

I've never had to sign a form for any of my translations, although I remember translators at the company I used to work for having to go off to the notary. I always proofread my own work anyway, but having someone else look at it (another translator who works for the same agency in this case) is always a good back-up. Just wish he'd get back to me and tell me whether he's American or not. Grin

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 30/11/2010 22:00

Glad to have been some use - I always remember coriander/cilantro because I HATE the stuff. So much so that I once started a thread about it and was heartened to find others who hated it as much as me. I have even joined an I Hate Cilantro (Coriander) website.....

I will let you know if I can think of any others.

LinzerTorte · 30/11/2010 22:06

I wish I'd kept my recipe book from the USA; it would have come in very handy now! I know I can look recipes up on the Internet, but it's not quite the same. Had completely forgotten about cilantro though (just remembered the different pronunciation of oregano and basil), so thanks again stranded!

kickassangel · 30/11/2010 22:28

i love cilantro! and only realised after moving here that the yanks are right in calling it that - the seeds are coriander, not the leaves, technically.

my fave fast food is chipotle, where everything comes with coriander & lime rice mmmmmmm.

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 30/11/2010 23:24

kickass - have just discovered chipotle, isn't is just sort of Mexican flavour under another name? I have some chipotle mayonnaise which I currently smother everything with!

Linzer - OrEGano and Baaaaasil isn't it? Always makes me think of Lloyd Grossman.

tadventjennyp · 01/12/2010 03:11

My German group try and get me to say things the American way - tis quite funny. Last one on Thursday. Must try chipotle!

New nickname

ClimberChick · 01/12/2010 04:49

Oh God, Baaaaaaaasil does my head in (as does 'erb).

I can't believe you don't like cilantro/coriander. I love the stuff, especially with lime

LinzerChristkindlmarkt · 01/12/2010 05:08

I like coriander too, whatever it's called!

Ah yes, I almost mentioned erb as well. Why?!? I can just about live with baysil and oRAYgano, but do the Americans suddenly become French when they try to pronounce herb?

tadventjennyp · 01/12/2010 05:15

I like it too - and the new name!

Dh went to bed at 7.30 after he had fallen asleep in the bathroom while the dcs were in the bath! He's not been well since he got back really. Have got the most horrendous dry skin, especially on my bump. I've been rubbing castor oil on it and Nivea Q10 but it is just flaking off. Any tips?

ClimberChick · 01/12/2010 05:27

Just reapply as often as you remember, up to every 30 mins

I'm going to slack of my run tonight and have a early night. DD teething is affecting feeding and sleep

thumbwitch · 01/12/2010 08:01

I lurve coriander - which thankfully is called coriander here too so I don't get confused - we grow it in the garden.

jenny, how much fluid are you taking in? I know peeing is an ishoo when pg but it sounds like you're dehydrated and need more fluid. Your skin needs hydrating from the inside out.

Still debating my Christmas name, which is why I haven't changed yet.

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 01/12/2010 10:16

Look I really am not mad alone in this I hate Coriander My brothers hate it too so it must be genetic. Apparently it's some sort of chemical reaction that some of us get.

Loving the new Christmas names!

Dd1 woke me up at 5.18am this morning. Dd2 was already in bed with me as she had woken in the night (lots of rain, very noisy). Dh was sleeping in another room as he was working and didn't want his phone to disturb me. Now I'm up he's nowhere to be seen so has obviously gone into work and been up all night. Dd2 still peacefully sleeping in my bed. How come the youngest child in the house is the only person still asleep? Tis not fair.

LinzerChristkindlmarkt · 01/12/2010 10:34

My mum doesn't like coriander either if it's any consolation, stranded. Wink

Sorry to hear about your early start to the day. DD1 will often sleep later than DD2 and is usually asleep earlier, although I almost always have to wake both of them in the mornings during the week. DS was up at 6.30 this morning as he was so excited about opening his Advent calendar, so that was one child less to wake at 6.45!

It's snowing steadily here at the moment and I can no longer see out of the skylights. Fortunately the DDs finish school at the same time today and so are walking all the way home together (they usually walk to kindergarten with friends and I pick them up from there, or I pick DD2 up from school if she's on her own). I'll have to dig the car out at some stage though, as DS has his appointment with the lung specialist this afternoon (oh, and I need to pick him up from kindergarten, but can always walk there).

thumbwitch · 01/12/2010 11:36

Am Angry and pissed off with things, mostly myself - my oven is soooo annoying when it comes to cake baking! But if I had done it earlier, I wouldn't be fretting so much over my cake's non-cookedness as I am. It was supposed to be cooked by 10:10pm - that's now 25mins ago - and the insides are still all squishy. It's firm on top all right but the insides are like liquid mush still (Chocolate gooey cake), and I can't see that leaving it 5mins out of the oven in the tin is going to make it any more cooked, so am continuing to bake it. Which means it will be over-cooked and dry by the time I am happy it is cooked enough in the middle. :(

And I have just had an email from the estate agent re. the replacement oven at my house in the UK - call her urgently - no hint as to why, so I call and she's on the phone! Not her fault, obviously - but bloody annoying when it's 10:30pm here. GAH!

LinzerChristkindlmarkt · 01/12/2010 12:11

How frustrating thumb - I had the same problem with some brownies I made not long ago, and ended up having to throw them away. By the time the inside had cooked, the top was so hard as to be virtually inedible. Hope you manage to get in touch with the estate agent soon.

I am very frustrated with myself as I am spending far too much time on MN, considering the amount of work I have to do. I'm only allowing myself to check the threads I'm on, but those are the threads that I post on...

thumbwitch · 01/12/2010 12:18

OMFG. I am so incensed I can't bear it. Apparently, there isn't enough electricity in my house to serve the new oven, despite there being a 30amp fuse in situ, that was used for the previous owner's electric oven, the electrician can't find the cable and thinks it must have been plugged into the 13amp plug (it wasn't). SOoooo - the new electric oven is useless unless I spend £££ getting electric cabling put in place. Now they want to put a replacement gas oven in - but it was so hard finding a replacement electric one that fit the hole, I can't believe I'll manage to find a replacement gas one!! GGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Angry x million

LinzerChristkindlmarkt · 01/12/2010 12:24

Oh no, what a nightmare. Are you renting the house out at the moment?

kickassangel · 01/12/2010 13:11

thumb - we found that in our last house - the previous owners had done huge amounts of work, but didn't bother putting an oven cable into the kitchen. we DID find an oven that fit AND only ran off a 13 amp fuse though - i think it was Neff, but there are ones out there that work below 13 amps. you can't get the self-cleaning ones though.

well, we're almost over the jet lag & i feel slightly normal again - dd slept through til 6 today (better than the 4.30 on mon) & i have a HUGE list of painting to do - the carpets are being fitted on fri, so i better crack on with it.

kickassangel · 01/12/2010 13:12

any good?

thumbwitch · 01/12/2010 13:16

yes, I am. It's a PITA.
I have just been on the phone to my lovely Dad who is going to try and help, even though he shouldn't have to, but if it saves me some money then I am very grateful to him.

He has a friend who is an electrician who can go and have a look to see whether or not there is still a 30A cable in existence anywhere, or whether it has been removed entirely, and to give a very rough guesstimate of how much work would be involved in replacing it and how much it would cost. So that's something.
