If you have used one, what did they do for you and what questions do you ask? tia

The relocation agent's real use is to provide a single point of contact for you when moving internationally, even if much of the actual work gets subcontracted to their contacts. They can also smooth the wheels of bureaucracy re visas/ ID cards etc.

Our relocation agents have done the following:

  • scheduled and arranged international shipping for all our stuff- this included a visit to our home to assess requirements and then full pack up, shipping, customs clearance, storage and unpack to our home at the other end.
  • liased with animal relocation specialists (we have 2 pet cats) at each end who then did all the paperwork re transport and quarantine.
  • sorted out visas, medicals and ID cards. ie send you all the forms, check it all submit it and chase up queries/delays
  • arranged temporary accomodation in new country (serviced apartment)
  • Got utilities sorted out for apartment when we moved into permanent accomodation
  • Arranged real estate agent in new country and gave them brief so that the day after we arrived we went to see 10 apartments that fitted our requirements.
  • Answer any questions you might have re the location.

The other thing they do which is really important (although we didnt need this) is sorting out schooling. This is very important if you're relying on finding places in the UK curriculum private schools in certain countries which are often hugely oversubscribed.

However, they are not a substitute for own research as they can make suggestions but you know your family best.
