Severe anaemia

My partner’s mother is in hospital with severe anaemia. She had an endoscopy and they found a stomach ulcer caused by medications which the ulcer has been bleeding. She has been struggling to eat the last few weeks. Since the endoscopy she has been breathless. She has refused a blood transfusion due to religious beliefs so is having iron infusion and erythropoietin. The doctor has told my partner today she has sepsis too and is on antibiotics and has a 50/50 chance of survival. We are so stressed out.

My partner feels awful as he says his mother said because he took her to the doctors about her ankle infection she said that he caused all this. He had to take her as it was not healing and he kept saying for weeks to go to the doctors but she kept putting it off and he rang for her. Does anyone have any advice please?

His mum is an adult and sadly adults don’t always take responsibility for their actions. Your partner sounds like a loving son who did the right thing. It’s not his fault. His mum should take medical advice and have the transfusion, no point dying for religious principles.

Your partner needs to know this is not his fault
His mother is being selective with treatment and might die because of this
This is not your partner 's fault.

It's not your partners fault. If she hadn't been seen she might not still be here due to the sepsis. I imagine his mum is frightened and just lashing out. I hope she pulls through.
