Hand hold - DH likely to die in next few days

My DH went to hospital a month ago with seizures that wouldn’t stop. He was resistant to all medication so they had to put him in an induced coma on ICU to try and stop them and reduce swelling on the brain. This last option hadn’t worked, as they don’t know the underlying cause for the seizures and they’ve now told me he’s unlikely to survive.

We have two young children and I’m not sure how I can face life without him or how I would break the news to DS9 when the time comes. My other child is 4. I’m in bits, he’s only 39 and was fit and healthy before this.

We’re just at the hospital and they said they can try autoimmune therapy with plasma for a couple of days to see if that works. It’s a long shot but they’re trying whatever they can. They also can’t do surgery as the brain swelling is too big and they said it isn’t encephalitis. Praying this may work a miracle.

Praying with absolutely everything in me that it works and your husband pulls through this. Your post has had me in tears at my desk. Fucking life can be so cruel.

Whatever happens, I wish you and your children all the love and strength in the world.

Please don't listen to this OP.
I've spent over 30 years in the NHS and my
DC is an ICU nurse, they do everything they possibly can to treat people, where there is even the slimmest chance of recovery.
Your DH is only young and I promise they will not just give up on him because they want a bed.

Cantalever · 17/07/2024 14:43

Praying for a miracle, OP. They can and do happen. Praying for you and DC too.

newyearsresolurion · 17/07/2024 14:47

Really sorry OP, very much hope the autoimmune therapy works and your husband will recover. Sending love and a handhold to you and your children ❤️

LizzyA123 · 17/07/2024 14:50

Fingers crossed for you Op, hope the treatment and time will help your DH come through this. 💐

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/07/2024 14:52

Really hoping the new treatment works. Sounds like they’re trying everything. It’s awful when they don’t know the cause/reason as it feels like they’re fighting blind.

supercatlady · 17/07/2024 14:54

Many years ago a colleagues brother had similar symptoms. It was treated with chemotherapy - possibly that’s the same as the autoimmune therapy? Sorry, I’m not medical.
so sorry you’re going through this

Can I echo this? In my experience, everything is tried until there is no hope, and frankly, even beyond no hope in case something does work. Sometimes it's direct treatments, and other times it's buying time to allow the body to heal. There is never a decision to 'free up beds'.

krustykittens · 17/07/2024 15:05

I am praying for you and your children, OP, and that you have a miracle over the next couple of days. xx
