Hand hold - DH likely to die in next few days

My DH went to hospital a month ago with seizures that wouldn’t stop. He was resistant to all medication so they had to put him in an induced coma on ICU to try and stop them and reduce swelling on the brain. This last option hadn’t worked, as they don’t know the underlying cause for the seizures and they’ve now told me he’s unlikely to survive.

We have two young children and I’m not sure how I can face life without him or how I would break the news to DS9 when the time comes. My other child is 4. I’m in bits, he’s only 39 and was fit and healthy before this.

I just wanted to give you all an update on DH. They think he’s now getting better which is fantastic news and I can’t tell you how relieved we all are!

He’s woken up and still in ICU but talking and his memory seems ok. They still don’t really know what’s wrong with him, most the team seem to think he has a mitochondrial disease whilst a couple of others think he has auto immune encephalitis. They’re going to do a muscle biopsy on his leg to see if it is mitochondrial. He’s also had his immunotherapy and is now on a high dose of steroids.

His hand and arm are still twitching a bit but now they think the seizures are a type of epilepsy called EPC (s subset of epilepsy that gives continuous seizures) which can be caused by mitochondrial or encephalitis and is less dangerous than other types of epilepsy. So they don’t think his brain will continue to swell but they’ll do an MRI next week to check.

So amazing he’s improving after a very close call but unfortunately if it is mitochondrial the outlook isn’t great but he should be able to have some sort of life I think.

overall, they think he’s getting better but still remains a bit of a medical mystery.

Fantastic news that he is getting better OP, and here's hoping it isn't mitochondrial and instead is something more easily treatable.

exiledfromcornwall · 24/07/2024 10:37

Great news OP. Interesting to see that autoimmune encephalitis is now considered a possibility. Have they done a lumbar puncture to check for any antibodies that could be involved? It may not throw up anything, which was the case with my DH, but it could help to narrow it down. If it does turn out to be AE, I highly recommend getting in touch with Encephalitis International (aka Encephalitis Society), who are a mine of information and support for sufferers and their families/carers.

Silvers11 · 24/07/2024 10:37
