Hand hold - DH likely to die in next few days

My DH went to hospital a month ago with seizures that wouldn’t stop. He was resistant to all medication so they had to put him in an induced coma on ICU to try and stop them and reduce swelling on the brain. This last option hadn’t worked, as they don’t know the underlying cause for the seizures and they’ve now told me he’s unlikely to survive.

We have two young children and I’m not sure how I can face life without him or how I would break the news to DS9 when the time comes. My other child is 4. I’m in bits, he’s only 39 and was fit and healthy before this.

I’m so sorry to read this OP. What an awful thing to be going through. I really hope you have a successful outcome from the treatment 💕.

Have you considered getting a second opinion re the encephalitis? One thing I have discovered since my DH had it is there is a lot of ignorance around this disease, even among the medical professionals.

Makeaiminggreatagain · 17/07/2024 21:12

Just sending you all the luck OP, miracles do happen.

Scentedjasmin · 17/07/2024 22:12

A quick google on the treatment and this came up.

According to the Mayo Clinic, 81% of patients with suspected autoimmune epilepsy who were treated with immunotherapy experienced clinical improvement, and 67% became seizure free.

Obviously you don't know whether it is autoimmune and your DHs condition does sound very serious. However, don't give up hope OP. Could you reach out to any other experts to see if they have any further suggestions? Clinicians do often have slightly different knowledge and experiences, so it's always worth trying. Xx

Hopefully your dh pulls through,I understand the like a bad dream.witnessing all that goes on whilst in ICU with a loved one is an unreal experience at times.wishing you and your family all the best.

Scenicgirl · 17/07/2024 22:49

So sorry to hear this, you must be devastated.
I lost my husband 9 years ago, albeit he wasn't as young as your husband, and when the time came I was in denial and now cannot remember those early days. The only advice I can offer is to take help whenever offered, your young children will be confused and need lots of love and support. Let people cook for you, (I forgot to eat) and don't think you can do this alone and try to be all things to everyone around you who are also grieving. Think only about getting through 1 day at a time. I still grieve for the times we missed and definitely feel robbed but now I can look back with fondness and smile about the many good times we had.
Sorry I can't offer more and hope you find strength. Life can be so cruel x

I'm so sorry love 🥲

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 17/07/2024 23:04

Someone close to me has had anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis several times. Treated with IVIG alongside steroids and other meds to prevent seizures. It's a relatively newly recognised condition (think first ever diagnosed case was 2007). The IVIG is key treatment and has turned around an episode more than once for the person I know.

Thinking of you OP.
