Family Holiday

With regret my husband has become newly disabled, his condition and level of pain means he cannot tolerate the confines of a 4 - 5 hour drive for our usual UK family summer holiday.
Do to the mechanics of overseas travel ie movement and sitting; airport, security, lounge, airplane, transfers etc he envisages if a short flight say 2 - 3 hours tops he could manage that journey better.
I'm looking at prices right now Croatia 2.5 hours, Canary Islands 3 hours.
In our family group there are 3 adults and 2 children.
The prices I am seeing so far are so out of reach, £1000+ per person.
The New Year is the ideal holiday shop time but at that stage my husband nor I had any clue where his health would be.
Can you offer any advice on how a family of five can do a short haul on a budget?
My poor husband is desperate for continuous hot sunshine to ease his pain, I want to help him if I can.

Where do you live

Are you in the UK? I ask because the Canary Islands are more than 3 hours from the UK. The Balearic Islands are a shorter flight though if you want Spain.

Sorry you won't get to Canaries in less than 4 hrs .. however I wonder if the hassle inconvenience and discomfort involved in plane travel is the answer

Travel to airport , sit around in hard uncomfortable chairs , cramped in a plane , transfer to hotel .. even to 5* with lounge access could be at least 6-8 hrs in total

Would you consider a trip down south to Cornwall or somewhere where although not guaranteed a better climate is expected ?

If it's any help my dneice is disabled and travels abroad, there is help at the airport if you request it prior to travel, disabled seating areas, priority boarding etc.
Why not try mainland Spain, that's not too far

The canaries are 4 hours assuming everything goes well. If sitting still/travel time is the issue, Devon is a far better option, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday travel is quicker than Friday, Saturday,Monday (I cross over the bridge daily!)

If you want to go abroad i would start with the flights from your nearest airport seeing what is affordable then book accommodation and transfer separately as he won't cope with coach transfers (you can wait ages for other flights). Also check travel insurance availability. Mainland Spain is probably your best option, or the Balearics (2 hrs 15 this week plus 45 mins on tarmac waiting for clearance to take off so 3 hours in the plane seat)
