Can you not sedation when you have colonoscopy?

LadyVictoriaSponge · 18/10/2022 16:25

You can have sedation, colonoscopy is the easy bit, the prep is the shitty bit, literally!

Daffodilsandtuplips · 18/10/2022 16:31

Are you having a colonoscopy?
I’ve had two. One without sedation, the other with it.
Youll be given preparation medicine in the form of laxative powder. It’s important to follow the instructions.
Dont stray too far from the toilet and use Vaseline as a barrier for after wiping.

I had air pumped into my bowel, it was ok, I hardly knew it was there.
Im
I was given Fentanyl and gas and air during the procedure. During the procedure the doctor topped the fentanyl cannula up as I was feeling uncomfortable. The gas and air made me woozy.
Afterwards, wheeled back into recovery and given a cuppa and toast.
They wouldn’t let me go until the woozy feeling passed, about an hour.

Sorry, meant to say you’ll be offered sedation, take it.

medianewbie · 18/10/2022 16:37

I had one on Sunday. Despite following the instructions for the prep religiously, it hadn't worked well so they suggested an initial digital exam without sedation. I said No so they gave me some Fentanyl & oxygen & proceeded. It wasn't pain free ('no has & air available today'). Poss that was just the unit I was at as the person after me had had their procedure abandoned due to pain.

serenghetti2011 · 18/10/2022 16:39

I’ve had 2 with sedation as others say worst bit is the prep use a straw to drink the prep and hopefully you’ll be ok I was fine no cramps just felt v cleansed and a bit washed out tbh the procedure was fine too, it’s better than you think it will be honestly.

Dp had one a few months back, he didn't have any sedation or drugs, was allowed to drive 15 mins later. He was recommended to bring music/podcast and headphones to distract him

Candyfloss2 · 18/10/2022 17:36

Last time GP fingered me I was in pain for 10 days . Had c section 6 years ago so maybe not qualified for gas and air.
would love total sedation . But need DP or in-laws at home over night . 1 to pick me up in hospital 1 to keep eye on me and kid over night .

making notes: straw . Vaseline . Thanks everyone.

Sounds like you may be helped by colvestram or treatment for bile acid malabsorbtion

CoastalWave · 20/10/2022 22:28

I've had 3. The first two were pain free. The third one was horrific. I really think it depends on whose doing the procedure. After no 3 I've insisted on a GA for the next one - I really do not want to know.

But like I said, first two, barely noticed I was having one.

U ever tried those sachet ? Help a lot ?

Take the cholestyramine sachets they should help. If you find it too disgusting to drink ask to be prescribed colosevelam which is the tablet form.

Be aware if you are on any medication they need to be taken an hour before or about 5 hours after taking it as they are a binder and take it all out. They were designed to lower cholesterol by removing the bad cholesterol

Candyfloss2 · 21/10/2022 11:54

U r Right . Just checked :
