My FIL has stage 4 cancer (for the past 4 Years) he has done exceptionally well but last year the immunotherapy stopped working he had to go back to chemo and has unfortunately declined since then. Bouts of sepsis, hospitalised for nausea etc. then he got blood clots on his lungs - with medication these have cleared but his heart is now failing.
He is currently in hospital on oxygen, unable to do anything for himself, can’t wash himself, isn’t eating much at all (lost 1 stone in 2 weeks) and is very breathless and tired.
The medically team don’t seem to know what to do with him. We have been told lots of different tests etc that all end up being cancelled or the plan changed but no one really says why.
At the start of his admission he tried to do as much as he could for himself and told them that he did not want any help at home etc but now he has given in to the nurses wishing him etc.
Should he be in a hospice or can they do more for the stage 4 heart failure and will he likely resume a quality of life again?
Who should we ask and what should we do?
He has a DNR (initiated last week), but we are terrified he will just die on the horrible ward he is on (not anyones fault, just a busy, hot, old, over stretched NHS ward).
please help!
