My mums cancer has come back

My mum had a liver resection at the end of 2013 after being diagnosed with a HCC which is a primary liver cancer. She has had scans since and has been well. I was called by her nurse specialist just now to say her latest scan showed the cancer had returned to her liver and maybe her lung. I have to tell her, she will be devastated, as I am.

Sorry to hear this MrsWhirling. My mum also had her cancer return after about a year of remission. It is hard to come to terms with your worst fears coming true. I really feel for you having to break the news to your mum as well, can I ask why that is? I hope that there are further treatments they can offer your mum, I think that once cancer has returned it is generally considered incurable but they can often keep it under control for a long time. My mum had 4 years of good quality life before the drugs stopped working, she is still here 5 years on but now going downhill.

English is my mums second language, plus I have a really good relationship with her nurse specialist. Also we were due to go to hospital and receive the results of her last scan, so she thought it would be better to cancel this op so the latest development can be discussed. I'm sorry to hear about your mum. I'm an only child and my mum is my best friend. My two children who are under 10 are incredible close to her. Lodi g her is unimaginable. I now my mum will refuse further surgery and I'm doubtful chemo. I'm so gutted. So gutted.

It sounds like a very difficult situation for you, wishing you and your mum strength.

Hi. Tough news to hear even tougher to have to be the one to tell her. I lost my mum to secondary cancer in January . I had to push for information etc but once I knew she was on the palliative care list (we're in wales) she had a lot of support. Don't be afraid to ask for help for yourself as well. I hope she will be ok though.

Wow, thank you all for you replies, so helpful and caring. I really hope it's not the worst news, she's having a scan tomorrow and then an appointment to discuss way forward. X
