What a terrible set of circumstances. It's not so surprising that in a strongly patriarchal society a person stepping outside masculine gender norms will be targeted and the punishment might not be as severe as one might hope for.

Turkey isn’t exactly known for punishing violence against women.

Here’s one thought: same crime - if the victim was a man - so a fight over money or business - would the punishment be more severe? And would the same crime have the assailant get let off scot free if the victim had been a woman? Is there also a racism element in there?

A horrific, despicable attack, I hope the victim sees justice done, although it seems they may not.

Leaving the victim's identity out of the equation for a moment, I don't think the feminism section is quite the right board for this discussion though.
