Hi, we’re two mums with two girls (one four months and one two years). We’ve not had any issues relating to being same sex parents but both our children are young and we expect to maybe have some challenges at some point - this isn’t something that we’re overly concerned about though. We’ve always taken the approach of being open and supporting people to ask questions if they’re interested and hope to just continue this. I’m interested in hearing the experience of others. We’re also hoping to meet other same sex families to make friends and support our children to have contact with families similar to our own. I think this will become important as they become older especially. I do sometimes worry how much opportunity for this that there will be in the area. Our (experienced) health visitor said we were the first same sex parents she’d had on her case load and our midwives had no idea about donor conception so it made me think that they didn’t come across it often. I found both surprising and it made me worry that our area isn’t very diverse.

With regards to talking to our children - our two year old has said things like ‘I have two mummies’ but this is usually similar to ‘I have two legs’ etc! She loves story time so we’ve made sure that we have books that reflect a range of families, including same sex parents and donor conception - we hope this will help discussions in the future.

Looking forward to hearing about others!

Depending on where in Lancashire you are, it might be worth checking out proud to be parents on fb. They are an LGBTQ charity that organise meets for LGBTQ families to meet and for children to interact together.
