Registering a birth

Hi! Does anyone have experience of registering a birth in the UK as a same sex female couple? I want to know if the form says parent 1 and parent 2 or mother and father? Or if there are separate forms for each situation?
TIA

I'm a Registrar. The birth certificate will show 'Parent' and 'Mother' - the mother being the person who gave birth to the child. Is this your baby, GoodMornin? The Registrar will ask you both if you were married to or in a CP with eachother at the time of the birth or conception.

Yes we were in a civil partnership at time of conception. So is there a separate form for straight couples and gay couples? Thanks for your answer

It's not a separate form, as such - it's the same form of entry in the birth register but the terminology is different. 'Father' and 'Mother' for the child of a heterosexual relationship, 'Parent' and 'Mother' for the child of a same-sex relationship.

Thank you, that's really helpful Smile

That's very cool - good work, form designers!

I saw this and though I know you have an expert answer, I wanted to say congratulations on your baby! Registering ours was so easy and I was relieved as I'd been worried they'd want all sorts of documentation and so on. As it happened the lovely lady who did it was really excited as we were her first lesbian couple who'd taken advantage of the law regarding fertility clinics (ie., you both go on the cert, even if you're not married or CP, if you were treated at a registered clinic). Her excitement was so lovely and it is one of my absolute favourite memories of that early stage with a newborn. I hope it will be for you too. Smile

Thank you so much, that's so kind. We had a similar wonderful experience with the registrar who performed our civil partnership 6 years ago. It was the first one she'd done and she was excited to be able to legally join us and it was just lovely.
Baby due in June and we are so delighted Smile

Me and my wife have different surnames. Even if I am the birth mother, can I give my baby the surname of my partner?

Very interesting! Just out of nosiness, does the bio father get recorded at all?

Oh, and congratulations on your pregnancy, OP! Flowers
