What would/did you do if your adult child started hormones?

Would like to hear opinions. My DD (thinks she’s trans) is an adult and goes to uni and therefore I have no control over whether or not she tries to start hormones and I strongly suspect she will. I don’t want her doing this as I believe she’s been brainwashed by the trans trend and I don’t want her to make permanent changes to her body, but she’s an adult and I can’t stop her. Was wondering if anyone else is in a similar position or has been and could tell me what you did or plan to do? She won’t listen to anything I say or try to explain to her. If she does go on hormones should I just let her get on with it and ruin her body because she’s an adult and can do what she wants?

Does anyone know if the NHS taking therapies would be neutral or affirmative in it's support?

Would it be suitable for counselling for a young person? Thanks

Sorry to hear of your discovery @Orangesandlemons77

I’m not sure how the prescribing for these drugs work, but as your son is over 18 I think it’s possible they were NHS prescribed.

Regarding NHS talking therapies, it may depend on the individual you get. I wouldn’t hold out hope of them being neutral personally. More likely to be affirming.

If you can afford to pay, then there’s a directory here of sensible therapists.

Thanks. Don't they have to be on waiting lists for years for the NHS though? I had a look at "gender GP" on the internet and wonder if it might be with something like that.

We haven't said anything. I sent him a message (he stayed out last night) just saying we loved him and if he wanted to talk in confidence anytime I'm here. So he must know we are aware.

I'm on HRT atm myself for the menopause and the patches DS has been prescribed look similar. I thought HRT patches were a smaller dose than e.g. the pill, a tiny dose?

I saw this online and it worries me about the changes that can occur even after puberty from these, thinking of sending this link to DS but thinking about it first.

Surely they have to explain all this before they prescribe it right?

I would follow the advice from here tbh. It is a very similar thing - allow critical thinking, ask questions, do not cut ties and let her make her own decisions. Is a visual appearance all it takes to change gender (not sex) - what do they hope to gain from this. etc

Thanks. Looking at the Gender GP site made me feel angry, click to say which transition you want, track your progress on a tracker, all expensive and very easy to access :-( looks like they are profiting from the vulnerable tbh.

Yes, even the ‘trans community’ think Gender GP is bad.

The advice from @saltysandysea is sensible,

Also, although I think it’s mainly aimed at parents of under 18s, there may be some useful strategies here
