Urgent help with bailiffs

DH got 3 parking tickets about a year ago. He appealed them as he had a valid permit (it had fallen off). His appeal was rejected as they said if it had fallen off it was his fault .

By this time he had been made redundant so he contacted parking services to ask if he could pay in installments as he was on JSA. He heard nothing back.

We have just had a bailiff demand for £800 . He wrote back to them and explained the situation, copying his original letter to the council and they say that they have valid warrants of execution and they cannot refer the matter back. He has to pay the £800.

Can they do this?

I would have thought that when he didn't get a response to his request to pay by instalments he would have assumed that he had to pay it all in one go.

No doubt it's got so high because of costs.

Did he think it was just going to go away?

After he got the first parking ticket did he not think to make sure his permit was properly displayed?

the first time, yes ok it had fallen off. for him to then get 2 further tickets, well it is his responsibility to check a valid permit is displayed.

Yes it shouldn't have fallen off but it did.

Was it council property? If so, then it may be possible for the council to get the bailiffs to back off. If it's a genuine mistake, then there's no reason to pursue the matter, but don't understand why the appeal was rejected. yes, technically, not displaying the permit is the offence, but seems a bit harsh (as the reason most don't display a permit is that they don't have one)

How did 3 parking tickets get to £800

If you were giving birth in the car at the time then yes that is unreasonable to get a ticket.

I have phoned the council.

They got to £800 because they had the wrong address for us (we moved). Despite DH's original appeal being sent from our new address.

I have a form to call the bailiffs off. Thank you, you have all been most helpful

I don't know if the sarcasm was directed at me, but the council once got my council tax wrong, and the bailiffs showed up. It was a mistake on their part. yes, I should have dealt with it immediately as they had written numerous letters prior, but it didn't warrant bailiffs. They have the power to withdraw the bailiffs, as they work for the council (in this instance). Anyway, the council cancelled the bailiffs, sent me a new bill, and I paid it.

Oh sorry, Ilovemydog, you were very helpful (sorry). Hopefully the bailiffs are now called off whilst they decide how we have to pay.
