Driving without insurance

Anybody know what happens when you are caught driving without insurance?

[stupid] DP has been caught without insurance - long story but it elapsed, he was haggling with insurance company over price, they didn't get back to him, DS went into hosp for an operation etc etc

Basically he was without insurance for a day and of course in that time a lady drove in to his work van

Web is saying 6-8 points and £200 fine but just wondering what real experience is of this as if he is banned it will be terrible news for us

am intending to see a solicitor by the way

The normal outcome is a fixed penalty of £200 with 6 points.

If the police took it to court the maximum fine is £5,000 with 6-8 penalty points. The courts can order immediate disqualification. The police also have the power to seize the vehicle and, in some cases, destroy it.

As your DP was involved in an accident whilst uninsured the courts can impose harsher sentences.

The police will normally issue a fixed penalty unless they are also prosecuting for other offences.

depends.

he will go to court. the judge will decide. did he get the car seized?.

very stupid and just not worth it. but youd be surprised how many people just dont bother with insurance.

prh47bridge · 28/04/2010 23:25

No, he will not necessarily go to court. Driving without insurance can be dealt with as a fixed penalty offence - £200 and 6 points.

i always report for summons.

£200 and 6 points however under the new laws the motor should have been seized.
