Unoccupied house in the street

I wonder if anybody has any knowledge of the following situation.
A year ago a neighbour died. He was born in the house and he was 81 when he died. He had a sister who was in a home in a state of dementia. I don't know whether she is still alive, but in any event she is not in a state to do anything about it.
When he died the police had to break into the house and the Environmental Health department held the keys, took the money out of the house and organised the funeral, which we attended.
The house is looking very dilapidated with a lot of rubbish in the front garden and I am wondering what happens in the circumstances? Do we have to put up with it being a 'blot on the landscape' or is there anything we can do about it?

your local council should have an 'empty property' officer

Thanks, I'll try that.
