Hi ive been looking into changing my daughters name by deed poll (shes 16) Ive found some sites online that charge £5 and some that charge £33. Does anyone know anything about changing names and if the cheaper one is a rip off or just cheaper as i cant see any difference.

Thanks in advance for any help

you need to do it via a solictor. she can call herself anything she wants to, but it isnt legal iyswim otherwise. when we changed our ds's surname the solicitor chargeed us about £80. (old family solicitor of fil so we actually didnt even have to go into office at same time)

we did it on line for about £55 , you have to have copy witnessed, then it is lodged with them and you get a copy so you can change passport names etc..

Hi you dont need to do it through a solicitor for it to be legal. My friend did hers through deed poll and has been able to change her name at her bank, passport etc with it.

I have found this fee breakdown in a guide from HM Courts - this is the webpage I got it from but you have to click to download the relevant leaflet.

? FEE BREAKDOWN
Court Enrolment Fee 10.00
Advertisement Charge 52.88
Copy of London Gazette 1.55
TOTAL 64.43

Cheques and Postal Orders should be made payable to
Her Majesty?s Courts Service (HMCS)

Hmmm... I don't think you need any of the above... All the online sites are a rip off. I wrote my own deed - you can find the correct wording on line...

Exmaple here:
www.gorge.org/experiences/deedpoll-wording.shtml

So that bit is free... it doesn't matter what sort of paper you print it out on... just sign it and get it witnessed...

The expensive bit is getting all your docs changed... about £80 for a passport now I think...

By the way... just to say, these on-line sites... what a racket... they promise to return your deed poll quickly... what a laff.. all they do is a mail merge with your info you type in - old name, new name, your address etc., and mail a standard word doc back... hurump...

I suppose people feel nervous and don't change their names very often... so you don't need satisfied customers...
