Cancellation fee. Do I have to pay

Hi,

We had a DJ booked for our youth group disco tonight but because of the icy weather hitting the uk we have had to cancel it. The DJ is requesting a cancellation fee.
There was no contract and I certainly was not informed of any charges in the event of cancellation. Does he have a legal right to charge this fee.

Thanks

did you pay a deposit ? If you have only just cancelled then I think you probably will have to pay something , especially if he has turned down any other bookings.

Thanks for the reply, No we did not pay a deposit it was going to be cash in hand on the night.

No written contract would mean to me that he doesn't get paid - he is unlikely to be paying tax on what you are paying him if it is cash in hand so I would tell him to stick it.

I'd like to see him try and take you to court if he was doing it cash in hand! Bet he won't....

I would possibly try and arrange another date for him (if you're planning to re-schedule the disco) and say you will go elsewhere if he insists on you paying a cancellation fee (and then just refuse to pay it)
