Car License Plate Formats

Can anyone point me in the direction of information outlining the shape and format requirements of a car license plate?

My friend is using my car while we are abroad. It was an import and because of the physical space on the car for a license plate, it is issued with a square one and the number on 2 lines. She was pulled up yesterday and threatened with a fine unless she changed the plate to the long version with the number on 1 line. Car has had this plate for 3yrs now, and I figured if it was illegal then it would not have been issued in the first place. She went in to Halfords and they have said it is fine.

The officer was very aggressive in his attitude and I'm worried if he pulls her up again in the future that she would be fined and have the unneeded expense of that. I'd like to find some info that she can print out and keep with the car log just in case. I've looked on the DVLA but can't find anything relevant.

Can anyone assist? Thanks!

What you mean you're not going to read it yourself .

Having read both of the links, I can see that motorcycles are not permitted to have a number plate with all the characters in a single line.

BUT there's nothing to say a car cannot have a number plate with 2 lines of characters, the prohibition is simply against 3 lines of characters.

vans usually have 2 line plates so I think it's probably fine
