Who is to blame? Insurance claim.

I have had a fireplace partly fitted. The man fitting it broke part of the surround and now I have to pay £300 for a new one to be made to replace it. I am considering going through my insurance as I am covered for accidental damage. Any advice when dealing with the insurance company?

Has the man who broke it not got his own business insurance?

it's the fitter's liability, and he should have insurance to cover it. But he won't want to claim because he will have an excess and/or it will put up his premiums. Talk to him first.

If he doesn't have insurance then it's still his liability if it was his fault and he ought to pay for the repairs.

However, if he was very cheap/local retired handyman etc you may not want to hit him with this.

If you go through your insurance check your policy first - it may not include damage by contractors, and/or they may pay up but chase him for the money anyway
