Non payment of bills...etc etc

Hope someone can give me some advice.... sorry if it goes on a bit....
MIL moved back home (abroad) summer 08. Her daughter moved into her property (owned outright) with her partner and kids. They agreed to pay a set amount rent each month. (No tenancy agreement no contract) Also agreed to put their names on all bill.
Fast forward 14 months...... they've paid no rent for months so MIL's direct debits have all been refused. They havent put their names on bills so MIL has court action being taken for non payment of bills. Court action for credit card debits (not being paid as no rent being paid in). MIL is unaware of all of it as no access to her account from overseas.
SIL has opened no post. Not passed any post on and so we've only just become aware of this. MIL will go mad! DP is in the middle. Approx £10k of debt to be paid back (a lot of it is bank charges and interest). Is it possible to get it all sorted without MIL finding out? (obviously if SIL starts paying rent)
Bills for gas, electric, water arent MIL's - is it possible to get them sent to SIL?
If MIL (she's a bit of a liability) sold her house and didnt pay off these debts could they come after me for them if i've put my name of correspondense trying to sort it out?
Thanks for any help.....

Can't help with most of it, but they can't chase you.

If the name on the bills is still MILs, she's liable, though; she really should have informed all of her suppliers when she moved out.
