I have an idea for a type of book.

How do I find out if it already exists and has a copyright and if it doesn't, how do I go about getting a copyright for it?

I think you can only get copyright in something once it exists, ie you need to write the book before copyright will kick in.

Unless you mean a new publishing 'format' (using old cabbage leaves for pages or something), in which case I think you probably need to find out about patents, not copyright.
