Please don't tell me to just use my words and ask the person concerned. That's not possible.

I know their name, date of birth and residential address. Is there any way to research this information online to find out if / when someone married?

That’s a LOT to know about someone who you don’t know well enough to ask if they are married!

they will either give you a song or country or say we aren’t married

Wrong. If there is no will a spouse does 'automatically' inherit under the intestacy rules. How much depends on the size of the estate and whether there are any children. It's complicated.

If there is a will, it depends on what the will says as to who inherits and how much. A person does not have to leave anything to their spouse (although this could be open to challenge if their spouse was dependent on them ).

And there is no 'UK' law. The law of Scotland is different to that in England and Wales.

If OP is aware of an existing will or is making one herself in which this person X is a beneficiary then their marital status could be significant. If X inherits under the will and dies whilst married and without having made a will themselves then their estate passes to the spouse Y and any children A, B, C. If X is not married then any children A,B, C will inherit. If there are no children then X's parents inherit. If no parents, then X's siblings.

If X has made a will it doesn't matter whether they are married or not.

Perhaps the more important question for the OP is whether X has made a will.

I ask this because this might open up new ways of identifying if the person was married re the will being a public record.

Where have you stated you plan to “call them up” for making up they are married and why is it such a big thing to you?

Oh is this an odd inheritance thing, where they can only get granny’s money if they are married and not if “living in siiinnnn” and you want to call them out and claim it all?! 🤔

If that were the case lawyers / executors would be doing the leg work to ensure the terms of the will were met. So, no, wrong scenario.

Dont think you can due to GDPR i think. Its basically an Act that protects people's personal information. Unless theyve got it stated somewhere like facebook then I'm not sure there is a way

To clarify my post above, there are three important questions. Whether X has made a will, whether X has got married and which came first.

No it isn't! Marriage certs are available to purchase online and you get a copy. They are a legally binding document and with enough information you only need to input same and get a copy of the cert if there is one. Same with birth and death certs. This is how bigamy can be proven.
